Election roundup: Republicans love Connolly

And not just the two or three who actually live in Boston. The Globe reports everybody from Ernie Boch Jr to "members of the board of the conservative Pioneer Institute" are tossing money Connolly's way.

Michael Freedberg doesn't say if he saw that article before he wrote Why John Connolly is the progressive and Marty Walsh isn't:

It may well be that entrusting the leadership of Boston to a radical transformer like Connolly is too risky for a vote base that seeks immediate security first; that dares not chance tomorrow's job for next year's career; that sees admission to a union as the ultimate accomplishment. Understood. But to call the urgency of Walsh voters progressive is a mistake. It is a politics of safety and security, of resistance to change because it sees — has learned to know — economic change as a grave threat.

Walsh picked up endorsements from the Massachusetts chapter of NOW and DotOut.

At a parks forum today, both candidates declared themselves in strong support of parks.

And now for something completely different: A kid dressed up as Marty Walsh for Halloween. A chick magnet endorses O'Malley. The chick magnet also like Wu.

The article mentions a number of republicans who donated to Walsh.

John Connolly's Republican Benefactors include

  • Former chair of the MA Republican Party, Mr. Rappaport
  • Republican Ernie Bock, Jr of Norwood
  • 11 board members of the conservative Pioneer Institute (they're big into privatizing Boston Public Schools)

The kicker it this;

  • Republican Gov. Weld appointed Connolly's mom Superior Court Judge in Dedham, and
  • Republican Gov Cellucci appointed his dad to the Boston Licensing Board.

John Connolly comes from an inside politics family. So would it surprise you to learn he got busted in this race for negative push-polling his opponent even while he holds a press conference complaing about a mildly negative campaign mailer from a 3rd party that supports Walsh? Or that he sent out negative campaign mailers in his 2007 race for city council against Murphy? He can say progressive all he wants. He financiers and the way he campaigns says dirtbag.

One last thing. He's a corporate lawyer that did real estate deals for developers. The last time he taught was 1 year in Boston, his third year out of college.

Well when you have the other guy potentially bankrupting the city with lavish gifts to labor of course all the business interest Republican groups are going to through their money and support at the other guy.

The city council, not the mayor, has the authority to approve or reject public worker contracts resulting from arbitration. In a previous post, Adam documented city council candidates positions on whether to approve or disapprove the BPD deal.

...then city councils will no longer have this oversight authority. The arbitrators' decision will be final, with no say from elected representatives.

Only if the bill became law, which isn't going to happen.

From the very same Globe story:
"Only 6.5 percent of registered city voters are Republicans."

C'mon, Adam. We know Boston's a small town, but that's ridiculously snarky to say two or three live in Boston. Shouldn't we expect better from our host, even knowing UH can sometimes pass for BMG?

JMF ran on the Republican ticket maybe 25 years ago for rep, I believe. It didn't go too well...

I support Walsh, I'm in a union, I don't wear a pinky ring, I don't have any mob connections, I haven't killed anyone recently. Your family has no need to fear my organized union wrath. I'm not much of a thug, quite frankly. I'm just a plain ordinary guy that does his job.

I am so sick of being maligned because I'm in a union. I actually tend to be rather conservative.

I believe Walsh has an obligation to do his job, if he gets elected, and that is to represent the taxpayers of the City of Boston. If he has to fight the unions, well, that's his job. To deal fairly and play hardball is OK, to play stupid games that piss off arbiters, well, that's the current play and it hasn't worked out too well for them.

Ernie Boch, Jr. eh? Well, he's totally relevant to Boston politics...

One more REALLY GOOD reason to vote for Walsh. Anything Republicans want, do the opposite.

Well done, you just admitted to being an uneducated voter who blindly votes on your party's line. You sound like the large majority of MAs ultra-liberals.

Walsh is the real candidate of the 99%.

Maybe because he is far more relatable to most repubs as a member of the 1 percent pulling down $300K per year as a single individual. Lucky him.

That Connolly is a corp lawyer from Harvard. My guess is that $3500 he claimed last year is bull shit.

up
Voting closed 0

No, he was not a corporate lawyer, but keep drinking that Marty Kool-Aid. And I'm one in that majority that don't think that Harvard is an evil empire. In fact, I'm AOK voting for people who are smart, like Obama, Patrick, Warren....

I'm sure you have lots of proof that Connolly cheated on his federal taxes and actually made more than $3500 as an attorney last year, right?

Not a corporate lawyer - http://www.scclawfirm.com/bios.php?page=john

He's a Partner, so even if he did represent anyone last year he's still getting some of the "approximately $2.5 million in annual gross revenue".

So who's drinking what cool-aid.

Walsh wants to create a new development agency in the City of Boston. Connolly wants to keep the
pay to play Boston Redevelopment Authority and turn our public schools over to the corporations that run charter schools. The corporations win with Connolly on every issue.

up

Hate to break it to you but Unions are corporations too.

Walsh's new development agency is just a BRA on steroids which will have even more power and less accountability to the people.

Our public schools are already a joke which primarily serve as employment centers for hordes of do nothing administrators. I don't think charters could do any of a worse job.

So there are rapacious corporations like big banks that will evict your ass for profit after they stonewall you for six months after you called them once a week to inquire about the status of your application for a mortgage you could afford to pay, and there are unions that exist to represent the interests of its members.

79% of all charters in New Orleans, they are new since Katrina, received a D or F from the Louisiana Dept of Education.

Your dissatisfaction with BPS administration should be taken on its own merit.

Connolly blames BPS administration and teachers. Who's left?

Last week the phone calls from the Connolly Camp claiming Walsh was a racist because he support Melissa's Law could be viewed as negative campaigning.Supporters of Connolly could see it as a positive campaigning and that he was reaching out to the hundreds of drug dealers and gang leaders who were released from prison in the Anne Dookhan fiasco and are now eligible to vote in next weeks election

Jamaica Plain Gazette:

...Boston poll watchers and politicos have been fuming over the lack of critical reporting on Connolly’s legal career. Their blog and Twitter screeds are warranted; though few would deny that the councilor’s tenure teaching poor and at-risk students was transformative, the fact is that he left that profession to attend law school, and later partnered with the kind of attorneys who represent people like McGrail, who just this month, under the South Boston office address for J.M. Realty, contributed $500 to Connolly’s campaign.

@GarrettQuinn: Hearing of a weird anti-Connolly push poll tonight. Hitting cell phones, too. #bosmayor 10/25 11:35PM

Is it a true rumor or a false rumor? Did Garret investigate or just leave it hanging?
