One expensive fire in Roxbury
By adamg on Sun, 11/24/2013 - 10:08am
In addition to the $500,000 in damage done by a fire Friday night, somebody at 10 Wyoming St. in Roxbury is now out up to $1 million for the value of the 176 marijuana plants police found growing inside.
Plus, of course, the owner faces criminal charges if found. Police add the Boston Fire Department's arson squad is on the case.
Police say firefighters found the plants growing in the basement and the second floor of the two-family home:

missed opportunity
for one hella contact high
Massive overinflation of price
Cops have a vested interest in inflating the true value of these things.
Not every part of the plant is used for starters.
The stuff gets dried out and weighs less.
Not everything will get the highest "street price" that has ever been seen.
Finally, there are a lot of PR and other reasons (DEA handouts of military weaponry) that make it desirable to vastly inflate what simply cannot be verified.
Poor insurance industry
Consider how much money the insurance industry is losing out on because pot growers can't buy insurance for their plants, lights, ventilation, watering, and other systems in a commercial operation. Electricians and plumbers lose out on business and amateurs more likely wire improperly, leading to fires. Legalization would help the economy, save lives, and property.

A Libertarian perhaps?
A Libertarian perhaps can oppose government intervention AND waste on bicycle infrastructure that benefits the fewest travelers?
Oh really?
You seem to be just fine with car subsidies.
Wait...
...you have an opinion on something besides speeding up vehicular traffic and public flogging of bicyclists? hmmmm....
Legalization wouldn't help them.
Legalize it and there would be zero incentive to grow pot in a Boston/northeastern US home on a commercial scale as southern farms could corner the entire market.
So this house would have had a meth lab or gambling operation instead......
Think globally, smoke locally
Organic local weed from family farms - smoke one with the farmer!
Good point
Government costs, fuel, and electricity costs make Mass uncompetitive with the south. Then there are zoning laws. The good news for pot growing is that agricultural land has a very low property tax assessment rate. Fed laws against interstate transportation of pot can favor locally grown. Macro-biotic advocates will be pleased too. Oh, and wrt driving, stoners are easier to pass on the road.
$500K?
$500K of damage to a building that recently sold for $248K?

They used the same multiplier
They used the same multiplier that they did for the value of the pot crop.
yeah you don't realize that
yeah you don't realize that he had stuff inside that was worth money? houses don't generally sell fully furnished...
$500k
Well, it did mention at least one apartment was undergoing renovations?
Don't have to be Dick Tracy
Walk around the neighborhood, anybody who still has their window airconditioner running 24/7 is probably growing something.
Anybody rent a thermal camera?
Has anybody rented a thermal imaging camera to look for insulation leaks in their house? Cost seems high for the service.
