Barber murdered in Tremont Street shop

Family and friends are mourning the death of Rick "Slick" Knight, a barber, father and uncle who was gunned down shortly before 6 p.m. in the barber shop at the rear of Good Eats at 996 Tremont St.

He is Boston's third murder victim this month.

The shop is a couple blocks away from where Joseph Morante was shot to death last year.

That's the South End

I thought that was the dividing line.

Hammond Street is the historic dividing line.

Funny how that line doesn't seem to stop bullets....

Exactly...but I think the point of people pointing out that it's the south end is to show that crime doesn't just occur in roxbury and dorchester. It touches the "nice areas" too. You would think the media would know the diving line. I feel bad for the fam of the victim.

First, yes, regardless of what neighborhood this happened in, somebody was shot.

As for neighborhoods, I don't think anybody who follows this sort of news is unaware that the South End is not crime free - or that violence is new to that particular stretch of road (just yesterday, a judge ordered a man held without bail for allegedly gunning down that poor phone-store clerk on Tremont).

Northampton st is the least argued about dividing line....

No, that's Roxbury. Those of you who overpaid for a condo over there would love for us to believe that it's still the South End, but no, it's Roxbury.

I love when people call Roxbury The South End. It sounds so fancy.

The border between the South End and Roxbury is the centerline of Hammond Street, thence along an imaginary line just north of Ball Street that curves northerly (basically, the course of the old Roxbury Canal) and runs between Harrison Avenue and Fellows Street.

Some juicy details may be found here: https://archive.org/stream/actsresolvespass1860mass#page/138/mode/2up/se...

Living in the area (two streets away) I've been that the area is called "Lower Roxbury," but the post office says its Roxbury Crossing. Don't know who to belive, always wrote "South End," as it doses sound nicer.

Never trust the post office's notion of neighborhoods. I live squarely in Roxbury (almost equidistant between JP and Dorchester). The City agrees by having me on the Roxbury trash collection/recycling schedule and listing my voting district as "Roxbury". The permits for when my house was built ~1900 and old Sanborn maps say Roxbury. However, the post office decided to include our block in 02121 and calls it Dorchester- but they call the next block over Roxbury. It seems to me like many sub-neighborhoods and squares in Boston straddle more than one neighborhood (Egelston, Jackson, Grove Hall, for example) and the post office seems to have generally preferred to stick all of a sub-neighborhood in one zip when they drew the map.
In this case, Div2Supt is right that the historic dividing line was around Hammond Street (I typically use Melnea Cass for shorthand- but it's not quite precised). For whatever reason- the zip code line here is actually pretty accurate- with 02118 ending near Hammond, cutting through Ramsey Park, and then meeting up with Melnea Cass.
I think (per speculation) that the Mass Ave dividing line notion came about because the Roxbury side of Mass Ave was always a bit more industrial (less of the typical South End rowhouses) and much of it was later knocked down for public housing, parks, parking lots, etc so it feels geographically divorced from the rest of the South End. Lower Roxbury (as I understand it) is the area between the Roxbury Highlands (think Fort Hill- generally speaking bounded by Columbus, Malcolm X, Washington, down to around Ritchie Street) and the South End. This would include some, but probably not all of what we also call Roxbury Crossing.

Who cares whether it was Roxbury or the South End, for Pete's sake? It's a damn shame. Any idea on what happened--robbery?

I lived at an indisputably South End address for a long time, and my Comcast bill always said Roxbury. Resident parking signage is another useful indicator, but still a source of dispute. Any time one of these questions come up -- the definition of the Allston/Brighton border is an old, ongoing debate -- I look to these maps, which crowdsource the definitions of neighborhood boundaries: http://bostonography.com/2012/crowdsourced-neighborhood-boundaries-part-... By this measure, consensus defines the South End's southwestern border as Mass Ave; a smaller group (including the BTD) deems Melnea Cass to define the edge.

I live in the south end 2 streets over from DARTMOUTH Street. there are always shootings on this side of Mass Ave.there are robberies stabbings & shootings from this side all the way over to Cathedral and down Pine Street side. If you need a south in resident sticker to park I consider it south end but again this shows that no matter whether it's Mattapan Roxbury Dorchester South End or Brighton crimes and murders happen. Instead of thinking about what side of the tracks this man was killed on we should be thinking how much of a shame it is to lose another business owner/Hardworking Man in this area.

Does anyone know how the shooting occurred or why/how the man was shot? Barbershops are supposed to be fun and relaxed :(

Was he the intended target? And who the hell has a problem with their barber?

Just so everyone knows this was a good man, family man, working man, a man that was loved by many. I was with the family at the hospital last night and only ask that you have his wife, kids and family in your prayers. I will miss my friend!

First and foremost, my prayers and condolences go out to his family. Did Rick go to English High in the 80's?

Yes I believe he went to English in the 80s

Perhaps morbid but I am curious why one person guns down another. What goes on in a person's mind that lets them kill another? What is so broken in one individual that he or she sees another as nothing more than a hurdle or obstacle to eliminate?

Who does not know that killing one person affects everyone who loved them? Why do most people see that no matter how much they may dislike another person that murder is a line that is just not crossed no matter what. Yet there are others for whom murder is almost just business?

Particularly this guy. What, why or how did he wind up in a place where another person killed him?

you might want to read up on psychopathy/anti-social personality disorder and similar. not everyone cares about other people. there are estimates that 1-4% of the population have this kind of problem. with them, there is no "line" to cross.

of course, i have no idea if this specific killing is a result of such a person, but knowing about this kind of thing goes a long way toward making some kind of sense as to the "how can people do such a thing?" type of questions. we like to think that everyone is pretty much the same, but it's just not the case (clearly!).

can see past the geographobes arguing over where and know most people are sorry for their loss.

Yeah that is definitely not the South End. To me, the South End ends at the intersection of and Mass Ave and Albany.

But either way, terrible story. Marty can start building his legacy now by making this ever evolving gang problem a huge priority.

Does this murder have any relation to the crash at the intersection of Mass Ave and Tremont at about the same time? Or is it just coincidence?

He was voted the best Barber in MA. He was also a mentor, a father, a husband, a grandfather and a good friend. He will be truly missed. I hope the loser that killed him gets destroyed the way he destroyed the people in our neighborhood. You will burn and hell because you have been cursed. Watch what happens to you and your love ones. You piece of shit!!!!!!!!

I met Rick when my son Patrick played south end baseball. My girlfriend and her husband owned TLC pizza now good eats. My son got his haircut by Rick and I'd always stay and talk to Rick. He had a great sense of humor, and was a real family man who often talked about his kids. His family meant everything to him and he loved the kids from south end baseball..... this is such tragedy and my heart goes out to his family and loved ones and to all the kids who's lives he touched. Godspeed Rick and thank you for caring about these kids. You made a difference. Rest in peace.

I am so very saddened by this news. I was one of Rick's children's teachers and you will never find a more committed and caring father. He was a great man who was extraordinarily selfless and put his family first. My thoughts are with Mr. Knights family and I hope they are able to come together and remain strong despite this senseless and horrific act. RIP Mr. Knight

Knew Ricky from the shop. Used to do business there. Shocked and disgusted to her about this, I remember he was starting a clothing line, ?Well Connected?. Smart guy. Very sad.
