Firefighters from across country show support for fallen comrade

Watertown street crowded with firefighters

Paul Weiskel shows us Main Street in Watertown, lined with thousands of firefighters showing their respects for Boston Lt. Ed Walsh, who died in the 298 Beacon St. fire.

There will be similar scenes today in West Roxbury, where Firefighter Mike Kennedy will be waked, 2:30 to 8 p.m. at the P.E. Murray Funeral Home on Centre Street, and tomorrow, when his funeral mass is held at 11 a.m. at Holy Name Church at Centre and West Roxbury Parkway.

Such courage. Such sorrow. Blessings on each and every one.

A good friend's father was killed fighting a fire 6 years ago. While undeniably tragic, the firefighter brotherhood is really something else to see. Houses from all over the country and the world send representatives to show their support, it's amazing to see the badges from all over.

I was walking past South Station on my way to work and a gang of firefighters in uniform walked past. I noticed uniform patches from Stockton, California, and (I think) Fort Worth, Texas. I couldn't read the others, but there were several in the bunch.

That would explain all of the SUVs emblazoned with fire department livery from around the region - Oxford, Nashua, Haverhill, etc.

I'm mourning with the rest of the city and have the outmost respect for the fallen. As I've talked within my circle I've also realized I'm only a couple degrees of separation from these men.

I was pretty dismayed to see 3 disheveled FF's walking down Gallivan Blvd (near Florian Hall) with open beer bottles at 5:30pm.

Come on guys, Poor form. I can only hope they were out-of-towners. Can't imagine BFD being that disrespectful. Kennedy's wake hadn't even been held and it was daylight and only hours since Walsh's funeral.

I'll cut you some slack at midnight but shape the hell up til then. the brotherhood is a great thing but don't tell me you're mourning that hard.

It's not mardi gras.
