Oh, sugar: Closed Roslindale restaurant to become a fitness club

The Sugar signs are down and new signs went up this morning: FitChoice is moving into the space vacated by Sugar at 4174 Washington St. in January.

Although the dining area at Sugar was small, the entire building contained a large bakery from its pre-Sugar days as the A. Boschetto bakery, enough for a 4,000-square-foot fitness center.

Interestingly in one of the sleepier corners of the City that Always Sleeps, the name on the center's Web site is FitChoice 24/7.

I'v had to drive to Dedham (Shelbyville) my entire life to access an affordable gym.

I liked Sugar, they had a nice brunch. Sure the dining room was cramped, especially on Sundays. But a fitness club? Where are all the members going park?

You could have asked the same parking question about Sugar as well. But as to where they will park, probably in the municipal lot that's maybe two minute walk max away? If they don't wanna make that walk, then they probably shouldn't be going to the gym either.

Oh the irony.

Yeah, and why are those Curves women's workout joints always next to a doughnut or ice cream shop?

And both franchises owned by the same person. It's called diversification of non-correlated assets (or perhaps inversely correlated?). No pun intended - but that's kinda ironic too.

Hello this is Crystal and I'm with by business partner Nina. We are opening the gym this summer. The person who responded that they have had to drive to Dedham their entire life, this is exactly why we are opening a affordable gym in the community. No we are not the same owners as Sugar. The square footage of our new state-of-the art fitness center is actually only 4,000 square feet.

Parking....since Roslindale is a walking community we are hoping parking will not be a serious issue for members.

Feel free to contact us thru our website with questions.

I've updated the original post with the correct square footage.

Will you be trying to open 24/7?

I'm curious - did you consider the space next to BoA on Corinth St as well? I thought that was a good spot for something like this with the parking lot right behind it, etc...

Is probably making more money through the tow company than the bank branch is.

It seems like the lack of parking will trigger a need for zoning relief and a community meeting. The Yoga Studio across the street creates a lot of illegal parking by people rushing to yoga class. They block hydrants, drive ways, and crosswalks.

In addition to street parking, there's a pretty good-sized lot off of Taft Hill Terrace, less than three blocks away. I'm usually sympathetic to people who want to park close to where they're going, but... you're going to the gym. Three extra blocks probably isn't a calamity.

Wonder if they could work out a deal with the Dunkin' Donuts across the street to use their lot, at least after Staples closes. :-).

I thought the city had worked something out with the lot owner. That's why tow signed aren't present.

There are just some people dead set that if a place doesn't have a large parking lot then it shouldn't go there. You're right, there is no parking issue with this spot nor in Roslindale Square at all period.

probably shouldn't live in the city. I don't know that I'll join this new place, as I'm a big fan of the Y, but if I did, I would mostly walk or bike to get there.

You're absolutely right! The yoga studio is solely responsible for all of the illegal and inconsiderate parking in that area of Washington Street. It couldn't possibly be caused by patrons of the dry cleaner, pizza joint, barber shop, physical therapist, or any of the other nearby small businesses. Nor could it possibly be caused by anyone attending a game at the ball field...

(btw - ^^^^ sarcasm)

the one that discovered that there's actually not a parking problem?

Have you ever been toBack Bay? JP? They have a parking problem. Roslindale doesn't. We do have an it-takes-10-minutes-to-cross-Washington-street problem. And there is most definitely a problem with the Washington St/South St light. But parking? Nah.

Zoning variance?! They are opening a health club in a commercial district in an existing commercial building, not building a new strucutre or opening a hotel. Also, there is no lack of parking in Roslindale Square. There is plenty of street parking and off street parking in the Taft lot. If people are parking illegally, you can call the department of transportation and get them ticketed. You can also ask local store owners not to take up all of the street spaces in the Square by parking in front of their own stores all day long, as I beleive a study done a few years ago concluded is the issue with street parking!

Isn't there a municipal lot 2 blocks away as well? I can't see parking being any more of an issue than usual. Everyone doesn't work out at the same time and most evening I find there are plenty of spots on the street.
