Hyde Park restaurant shut over failed refrigerator, lack of hot water, bugs

ISD last week suspended the health permit for Cordon Bleu, 1231 River St., over a variety of issues, including: Meat and vegetables stored overnight in a refrigerator that was too warm, no hot water and:

Evidence of live cockroach activity inside of the dry storage room and in main kitchen area. Evidence of what appears to be rodent droppings in the main kitchen area.

I love the Mayor's Food Court site. It's funny how Red Mango was suspended twice in the same month for a variety of disgusting things. Death to frozen yogurt shops!

Adam- I realize the public needs to know about the conditions and hazards of where they choose to dine. The city does have a site where you can see all violations for any establishment in the city, so do you have to broadcast it and make it worse? Not one place in this city hasnt had rodents, fruitflies or a expensive cooler on the fritz. This is people's livelihood.

Between having fruit flies/"a cooler on the fritz" and something more severe, like infestations of cockroaches/rodents and a complete inability to store food at the right temperature.

Running a restaurant is hard work but that does not excuse having unsafe conditions. And ISD really only shuts a place down if it's really bad, as the Mayor's Food Court shows.

The violations list is *lengthy* - demonstrating persistent negligence or willful ignorance of health code and basic food handling principles.

Particularly if you're going to "borrow" the name of the most famous culinary institute in the world, might want to get your act together.

Also, your freezer doesn't break "right before" ISD shows up, nor does your water heater "break the night before."

This is people's livelihood.

Then they should get their act together. My right not to get food poisoning trumps their "livelihood", and if they can't handle that, they should find another line of work.

Not everyone knows about the city's website. I also see no problem with exposing people/businesses for the work they're not doing. In this case, keeping a clean kitchen.

then they should be doing their damn jobs. I work part time in food service and there is no reason why people can't clean and keep food properly.

Cordon Bleu had its permit pulled in March as well, for, among other things:

AT INSPECTION -inspector opened the dishmachine to find inside crusted with dirt & many dead bugs ( small cockroaches )

Interesting thing today: Owner Marie Ketty appeared before the Boston Licensing Board to explain why she hadn't shut for three days as penalty for allowing an illegal gambling operation in the restaurant.

Ketty was originally scheduled to serve out that punishment in March, but asked the board to extend that because of the financial hardship she thought would be closed by being shut by health inspectors and then the licensing board. The board agreed, voted to let Ketty shut for three days in May, but Ketty didn't. She said she got neither a letter nor a phone call from the board about the new dates.

The licensing board votes Thursday what to do about that.

To be honest, I didn't know why you posted it either, but you had Cordon Bleu on the brain and did some investigating on the topic before the hearing today.

My memory might be fuzzy on this, but didn't the Metro used to run a column with highlights from the latest ISD inspections?

By the way, wouldn't that be 3 suspensions?

Two by the health inspector, one by the police/licensing board. Except it hasn't actually shut yet for the gambling citation.

Alright, then you're happy that Adam informed people about the potentially deadly conditions at this one?

The city has a website...so, there's no reason to tell people what the city's website says. That's not exactly consistent. If you said that he's being inconsistent by selectively only posting a few things and not all of them...oh, wait, I see you're getting to that...

And you're still wrong. Plenty of places operate without infestations, fritzy equipment, etc. They have their own methods of inspection as well as the city's and they NEVER appear on the ISD reports. In fact, the large majority probably never appear with a citation let alone a complete lack of hot water, improper temperature storage, and rodent droppings throughout the kitchen.

People's livelihoods stop where my possible death from botulism begins. Ok, actually, it stops well before that fortunately. If people wanted to keep their livelihood, then they should have done so before it reached the point where their kitchen has such major violations. Otherwise, why should we keep slumlords from renting out single-access sub-standard 1000 sq ft basement apartments to 10 immigrants? That's just effecting the slumlord's livelihood, man...who cares if their tenants would likely die in a fire. Also, their livelihood in this situation isn't unrecoverable. Fix the problems and reinspect them and they can go back to their livelihood. People still flock to Kupel's Bagels these days even though Adam posted about their "too many to count" mouse droppings on the raw dough back in 2012.

They don't deserve to operate a place like this, it should be clearly known so someone doesn't contact a major illness from a disgusting place like this. Restaurants like this is why Hyde Park has a bad reputation, and why we can't keep For Sale/Rent signs out of the windows.
