How long before they set up a border crossing on 128?

It certainly got a rise out of the gun nuts. Good to see the Border Patrol on the job for a change.

About a border "crossing" roughly 75 miles south of the border?

Why not require internal passports while we're at it? Oh, wait ...

... it was a really, really low-speed chase since Rockingham?

Gun nuts? We prefer "firearms enthusiasts," thank you.

I have absolutely zero problem with the Border Patrol doing its job, just not 80 or so miles south of the actual border.

You might not have a problem with the authorities asking for a citizen's papers, but I do.

I agree with you that claiming jurisdiction 80miles south
of the border is a bit of a stretch. On the other hand,
conservative estimates put US$4B of ganja a year sneaking
across the border from La Belle Provence of Quebec, when
I last heard.

I didn't know the stuff could drive!

Firearm enthusiasts, as you wish. As to your concern, are you saying that once someone gets past the border crossing point, they're home free? Much of the illegal traffic comes through the woods, far from official border crossing points. Do you want state and local police taken off their regular beat to do customs checks on the interstates?

I have no problem with cops asking me questions - I'm not doing anything wrong, and being a grownup, I know that some other people ARE doing something wrong. If they ask to search your car, you can always say no. 12 million illegal immigrants are in this country because the authorities DID NOT ask questions - is that a good thing?

You mis-spelled "gun nuts." I see a group that is rightly irritated at the Department of Homeland Insecurity WAY overstepping their bounds.

America: the only country where the People get outraged (and support sending invading armies) when others don't have "freedom", and make fun of their fellow countrymen for exercising their own freedom.

That's way too long for a bumper sticker, man.

Someone on that forum complained about a border check between San Diego and LA.

Obviously, theyre not aware that the US has two borders, hard and soft. Example, from mexico, mexicans are allowed to enter the US on a day visa (simply show ID at border) as long as they stay X miles from the border. Its either 50 or 75. This allows them to shop and go home without having to go through more serious entry requirements.

Maybe its the same in Canada? Canadians might be allowed to enter the US with only basic papers as long as they stay within the border zone.

This kind of enforcement should be offered to the beleaguered enclaves such as Weston and Dover. They might face herds of immigrants wanting their stuff. Think about Weston, where they successfully fought a bike path that would surely have brought undesirables there. Just think of all the poor teens from Roxbury or Lowell who would have cycled there to steal their 52-inch plasma TVs! Then if they had to fear undocumented folk, how the horrors would have been too much to bear.

Weston Police pretty much parks cruisers on their "borders" on Rt 30, 20, and 117 (all the state routes.) Amusingly, only from the Waltham/128 side- not from the Wayland/Lexington/etc side...EVER.

It's also pretty funny to see that, despite having nearly identical routes through them, the Weston:Wayland ticket ratio is about 3:1 according to that report the Globe released a year or two ago.

Brian McFadden, a cartoonist for the Phoenix, got stopped on I-93 South as well:

... During this unwarranted search, the agents asked about our citizenship status and our purpose for being in the Granite State. Mr. Nosy agent also took a good look around at the contents of our car. They were backed up by New Hampshire State Police, presumably to harass anyone who refused the search, as is every person's right. ... When the fuck did this happen? I have to be inconvenienced because the Border Patrol can't do their job at the goddamn border? The fact that this happened in the "Live Free or Die" state would be hilarious if it weren't so infuriating. ...

Also see Sen. Patrick Leahy's report on being forced out of his car at a "crossing" 125 miles south of the border in New York State:

... In a car with license plate one on it from Vermont. With little letters underneath it that said US Senate. We were stopped and ordered to get out of the car and prove my citizenship. And I said "what authority are you acting under?" and one of your agents pointed to his gun and said "that's all the authority I need." Encouraging way to enter our country. ...

I recall a similar news story from a couple of decades ago. At the time it was explained that the Border Patrol has the authority to set up checkpoints anywhere within (IIRC) 100 miles of the border. This allows them to harass tourists in the White Mountains whenever they want.

It may be a subtle message that Homeland Security is unhappy with New Hampshire for not caving in to Real ID.

When we used to camp on three or four contiguous campsites of a Memorial Day Weekend at Layfayette Campground and generate enough wood and herb smoke to fumigate the entire canyon!

In the past they have generally had jurisdiction within 100 miles of the border; this is not just a post-9/11 thing. This was affirmed by United States v. Martinez-Fuerte, 428 U.S. 543 (1976):

...with the exception of the Third Connecticut Lakes border crossing with Chartierville, QC, far north of the Flume at over 100 miles. That crossing is the only one in New Hampshire.

Vermont has the bulk of the crossings into Quebec; most of the routes for Quebec-bound drivers in New Hampshire refer to VT 114 in Norton and a tiny-sliver crossing with VT 253 in Beecher Falls VT/Stewartstown NH. Usually, drivers will continue into Vermont on I-93 and use the I-91 crossing at Derby Line/Stanstead (Rock Island), about 45 miles to the north, as the US 3 route is more meandering.

So yes, the Border Patrol has a 100 mile mulligan south of the Border with La Belle Province. Pardon me for my border-crossing geekiness.

I wonder what people WON'T put up with in the name of keeping those Evil Immigrants out of the country. You think eventually naked fear will stop selling, you keep being wrong.

I think what we need is to build a wall that runs the length of the entire northern border!

Amirite?

I, too, was stopped by Border Patrol on Sat 5/23. I just had to be a smart-alek (how could one resist)? I politely but laughingly asked the officer just "what border was I at"? She, at least smilingly, replied "we're doing immigration checks". I bit my lip, really I did. I noticed the officer in the lane next to mine had the drug-sniffing dog in his lane of cars. My officer didn't say anything else while I waited for instructions to either open the trunk or go ahead and leave. Finally, I asked, "is there something I need to do like open the trunk?". To which she replied, (get this): "Are you a U.S. citizen?". Of course I replied "yes". She then said, "Then, you can go.".....now, doesn't this strike someone as just plain outrageously odd (as if Candid Camera should be nearby)??? Sooooo, all it takes is affecting a Kentucky accent when saying you're a U.S. citizen and you're free to go?? Just like that???? so, all of you illegal immigrants, just remember to hide in the trunk of a while anglo-saxan female with a KY accent and you'll be just fine! whooppee!
Seriously! And I even voted for Pres. Obama but this sure seems Bushish.
