Zipcar charges $50 for late returns plus additional hours on the rental. That's $50 more then most drivers face in incidents involving non-motorists!
Hope they bought the extra damage waiver?
That's pretty much ridiculous as Zipcar knows who was driving that car and when.
To add, I once got a robo call from Zipcar chastising me for bringing back a car that was dirty. I didn't. I'm pretty much a neat freak, and I didn't even notice that the car *was* dirty. My theory was that the people who rented the car after me knew that they were going to mess it up with something, so they preemptively called in a complaint to pin it on me.
Based on that experience, you better believe that I now call every time there is so much as a paper cup left behind in the car.
I would love to eavesdrop on the call this "Zipster" is going to get....
Zipcar knows who was driving that car and when.
Not if someone breaks into the car and steals it.
Nor if someone hacks the RFID system.
Nor if someone steals a Zipcar customer's RFID tag.
Nor if a customer fails to swipe the RFID tag upon return, leaving the car unlocked for someone else to steal.
Nor if the customer swipes the RFID tag upon return but for some reason the computer in the car fails to register it.
As in "what if it had Ebola in it".
These are not likely possibilities - these cars are very rarely stolen, and then it is people "renting" and driving off with them.

They are also very rarely used to knock down fences and drive through people's yards by legitimate customers, so we're, almost by definition, into the realm of improbable scenarios.
Curious why everyone is so sure it is a ZipCar just b/c it is parked in a ZipCar space. The model is similar to the ZipCar one space over, but there is nothing saying "ZipCar" on the only areas visible in the photo that shows the wrecked car. Am I missing something? If I were fleeing an accident, I might park my car in the first available spot, whether or not the spot was reserved for someone else.
If you look at the red Honda next to it, you can very clearly see the green card-tap. Which is how you unlock and drive a Zipcar, I don't think the damaged car is actually a Zipcar either. Plus, only "luxury" models go without the giant green logo on the passenger side door.
The reflection obstructs the spot where the card tap point is, but there is a bar code sticker on the lower driver's side of the windshield which indicates that it may be a rental of some sort.
