Citizen complaint of the day: Jeez, guys, it's been nine months already

Audubon Circle sign with Tom Menino's name on it

A concerned citizen could take it no more and went out in the rain last night to chronicle the fact that one of those welcome signs still has Tom Menino's name on it.

City's response will be to remove the entire sign and not replace it.

So I can complain about wasting government money changing signs when they change it.

Honestly, given everything with Tom's name plastered on it, we could have a battalion of DPW guys blasting supersoakers of White-Out around the city and still not get everything.

The most important thing to know when entering a city is the name of the current mayor.

Menino should donate all his campaign war chest to remove his name from these, we don't need the name of any mayor on these. At least before we (inevitably) give away the naming rights to the 2 billion dollar convention center to Menino, these need to be cleaned up.

Glad to see Mayor Walsh has the Citizens Connect app on his phone!

But a few things-

1. Does the citizen seriously think that no one in city government knows that there are "welcome to" signs with Menino's name on them?
2. Are there no better things for the city to spend it's money on than changing the signs?

There were a few things Gov. Romney got right. Not putting his name on every sign was one of them, and it is one of the few things Gov. Patrick kept on doing I think was good. Let's hope that Walsh gets the hint and that his successors don't have Menino-like egos.

Mittens didn't want his name on any signs because he didn't want anyone to remember he was governor of liberal Massachusetts when he ran for President.

Funny that he would mention it frequently then.

He also used to mention that Romneycare should be a model for a national health program, until he said it shouldn't. So saying he used to do something has no bearing on what he believes or does now, other than it is probably different now and will be different again in the future.

Most Governors say their state is the best in the nation. Not Romney. Time after time he publicly criticized the residents of the state. It was insulting.

In fact, by many objective measures of citizen well-being, it is one of the better states to live in. Not only that, our tax burden is only middling.

He usually avoided saying the word "Massachusetts." Instead, he repeatedly said things like "In my state..." It was obvious he was trying to straddle the fence. I always wondered why Obama didn't call out the state name every time in his replies.

But sometimes ego gets the best of you. And besides, he perhaps was counting on his successor doing what the folks before did and just assign someone from Mass Highways to change all the signs.

Of course things still have his name on it. Thomas Megalomaniac Menino had to put his name on everything. So glad that technophobe and his BRA cronies aren't running the city anymore.

The city doesn't have the budget assigned to replace Menino's name everywhere.

If there's a particularly bad incident, they'll do it on a case-by-case basis. Otherwise...well, if we want them gone, this is why we pay the City Council all those big bucks, right? Let's hope they get on it and assign a budget to do something about the problem.

They can grab a bucket of paint and some stencils on their way out of the office at 3:15 and get out there with the people.

and just cover over Mumbles name with blank color - no Walsh stencil required.

I just noticed that one of Newmarket Square signs, by the commuter rail bridge outside the entrance to the mall has a color-matched big "Walsh" sticker covering the Menino part, so it's happening.

I suspect this has little to do with any actual differences between the two men.

The marine industrial park signs all seem to sport Marty's name now.

Yikes! Those cost between $850-$1,525 each, depending on the sign. And 1,182 pieces of property have former Mayor Tom Menino’s name!

In late July, when Boston.com asked about the lingering Menino reminders, a spokesperson told a reporter that Walsh wanted to put his focus—and funds—into other, more pressing, matters. “We’re trying to be wise about the way we’re using city resources to update the signs,” said a spokesperson, citing the importance of funneling resources toward schools and summer jobs programs instead.

was in May 2012, and those planters in the left of the frame were filled with crispy brown pine boughs from Christmas. I think the Menino signs are the least of the problem.

When the hell are they going to finish digging up the road? I forget if it's a National Grid or Nstar project, but it's been going on for months now.

So, you're saying there are already children growing up that will never know what it was like to have a mayor named Menino?

oops, wrong place.

If I recall the current Mayor was asked about this and he said he wasnt going to replace all the former mayors names until the signs needed to be replaced. A money saving thing.

Even when replaced, will they then display Walsh's name on them as well?

Would seem silly to have to go through this every time a new mayor is elected.

with a law, call it the Menino Law, forbidding affixing any politician's name to anything until five years after his or her death.

to the first mayor who, instead of plastering their own name on everything, credited TAXPAYERS OF THE CITY OF BOSTON. Not only would it save us from having to pay to have everything changed whenever a new mayor came around (because after that who would want to be known as the egotistical asshole who started using their own name again), but it might help those all-taxes-are-bad folks understand that taxes are the price of civilization.
