Man dies after being hit by Orange Line train at Haymarket

Updated with information from Transit Police.

Transit Police report a man pulled out from under a southbound Orange Line train at Haymarket this evening has died.

The man was conscious and talking to firefighters as they extricated him around 6:15 p.m. about 35 minutes after he was hit by the train. The man, white and apparently in his 40s, was rushed to Mass. General, where he died about 8:30 p.m.

Transit Police say foul play is not suspected.

Power was shut in both directions to let firefighters get him out. The Green Line quickly overloaded with Orange Line passengers using it as an alternative between Back Bay and North Station.

College drinks...phhhhfttt. Everything has to taste like Skittles for these kids. Your lack of taste is apparent in many ways.

Someone died--have some fucking respect.

He isn't going to be reading UHub if he's dead. I'm sure he won't be offended.

Civilized people show some respect the dead. We don't, for instance, desecrate their bodies. If you heard about a med student or a mortuary worker who did something grotesque with a dead body, what would you think of that person? Would you think it didn't matter, since the dead person couldn't feel it and didn't even know it was happening?

that that his friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors will, though. Think that one over.

The poor soul hadn't passed when he wrote that.

Someone injured would be fair game, perhaps, depending of the severity of the injury. Honestly, I was holding off in case the worse case presented itself, which it did.

Hey uhubmixologist,

I hope you feel just a fraction of this man's pain. A curse on you.

.. judging by this comment, you would probably be the one person pulling out their cellphone to take a picture of the person under the train..

"Expect delays" is an understatement. Dtx is a madhouse; we're being told to take green line to Copley and walk to Back Bay.

as of 5:55 pm - no other alerts (at least on my e-mail or phone) since:

Orange Line experiencing severe delays due to a medical emergency at Haymarket

For service between Back Bay and North Station, please utilize Green Line service at Copley and North Station.

They've got an MBTA person blocking the entrance redirecting at Chinatown without much explanation. It's a bit of a mess.

pro tip: Copley is in the Back Bay

Copley is the name of a station on the Green Line; Back Bay is the name of the Orange Line station a couple blocks away.

As of 7:10 northbound trains still being held at downtown crossing.

D line around 5:30ish onwards, outbound, was particularly bad. I was ready to commit suicide myself after getting off at Reservoir Cleveland Circle.

Can we just stop with the glibness?

I don't think that particular answer was "glib", just asking if that incident was the reason why the Green Line was also delayed.

that I could have done without. I know we all say dumb, insensitive or hyperbolic things sometimes but this seems especially egregious,

My hope was that such comments were not going to end up looking that bad.

Still, the potential for a bad outcome was there, and it happened. Poor guy.

Outside of the person being hurt, which is terrible...

Boy I am glad I know the MBTA bus network well. I left work (DTX) early to head to the Ghetto Meadow Mall in Medford for the Party Store (need more costume stuff). I saw some stuff on Facebook about this on the bus (134) on coming back and immediately looked at bus gps thing (which crashed briefly during this) to see which buses I could take from Wellington and avoid the Orange Line all together.

Two buses, ~30 minutes, and I was home. It could have been one bus but the 112's route just sucks and its faster to switch to an inbound 111 at Revere Beach Parkway @ Washington Ave than stay on the 112 thru Market Basket and Admiral's Hill.
