You can almost see the physical pain disappear as he starts speaking.

I was thinking the same thing.

I wasn't always a supporter of the guy, but his administration was remarkably scandal free, and he had the best interests of the city at heart. I'll give him credit for those things.

Thank you for sharing this video; that was one of my fondest memories of him. Never was his love for this city so evident.

I also love this WGBH documentary from 1984 urging us to "Meet Tom Menino" as he ran for city council for the first time.

...you had to give it that title.

Sorry, gotta go, something in my eye...

If he could get up out of that chair, we could recover, too.

You comment made me think of Robert Frost:

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

My own mother was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer not long after Mayor Menino was earlier this year. At 61, with a brand new grandson, and so much excitement for her coming retirement, her, and my, lives turned upside down with the news. I don't often let myself reflect on all her diagnosis means for us, and try to stay busy with my son and look toward the positives in life, but Mayor Menino's passing today has brought me to my knees in a way I would not have expected. Life is indeed short and precious. What a reminder not to put off truly "living" until retirement ( or the next job, or the new house,etc.)

Wishing The Menino family peace and comfort. Nothing gold can stay.
