Man charged with knifepoint sexual attack in East Boston; might also be suspect in rape three weeks ago

Boston Police report arresting Eduardo Selvan Hernandez-Ortiz, 20, of East Boston, after a woman was attacked early Saturday just as she was about to enter her Eagle Hill home.

According to police, the attack occurred shortly before 1:40 a.m.:

She was walking home from work and had just arrived at her home when a male suspect approached her from behind, pushed her into her front hallway, showed a knife and demanded money. According to the victim, after getting a small amount of money, the suspect sexually assaulted her before fleeing the area on foot in an unknown direction.

Officers radioed the woman's description and officers on patrol quickly stopped Hernandez-Ortiz - and found him still carrying the knife he allegedly used. He will be arraigned Monday in East Boston Municipal Court on charges of armed robbery, indecent assault and battery, assault with intent to rape and open and gross lewdness.

Police add:

The Boston Police Sexual Assault Unit continues to actively review and investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident as well as others in the area and believe the suspect in this incident may have been involved in a similar incident on November 1, 2014 in which a female victim was robbed and sexually assaulted while walking home from work in the area of Border Street in East Boston. Anyone with any information about either of these incidents is asked to call Boston Police Sexual Assault Detectives directly at 617-343-4400.

Herald readers will hit this one out of the park blaming Obama/immigration for the rapist.

Yeah I'm sure Obama personally flew the guy in on Airforce One and gave him a free phone. /sarc

If the suspect is here illegally it is an issue. Allowing other countries to dump their unemployed and criminals on us without consequence is kind of a big deal. The first generation immigrants here legally are often preyed upon by illegals (often the same gang members they fled their native countries to get away from) and at a disadvantage in the labor poor competing with those willing to work at below the minimum wage.

All workers are at a disadvantage when employers choose to exploit workers' immigration status to illegally pay them below minimum wage. Let's place the blame where it belongs - the employers, not the workers.

An assailant is an assailant, no matter their immigration status. It's actually not an issue, but a convenient way to criminalize and dehumanize immigrants. Assuming first that this person is undocumented, and second that undocumented immigrants are criminals and unemployed (which, duh, when you migrate you're often unemployed, doesn't make you evil) is... wrong.

While we probably will not see his plan in full enforcement for a while yet, cases like this one should be the true test right? If and IF this man is here illegally he should be immediately tried and then immediately deported. People like this are not only s detriment to society but also give the people who are here illegally but working hard to move themselves into a better position while contributing to our society in a positive manner a bad name as well. I don't see why this guy should even be a concern of our prison system. I just don't know how difficult or costly it would be to actually carry out something like this for every single illegal who commits a crime.

CIA reports at least 40% of the 'Turkeys' pardoned by President Obama have returned to the field where they have continued their attacks of terror against citizens of the United States.
date pardoned and their 'Code Names'
2009 Courage and Carolina, released in North Carolina (current status 'unknown')
2010 Apple and Cider deceased 'natural causes' 2011
2011 Liberty and Peace. released in Willmar, Minnesota.
Peace 'executed' 2012, Liberty 'executed' 26 April, 2013
2012 Cobbler , Gobbler, released in Rockingham County, Virginia. Gobbler deceased February 2013, 'unknown causes'. Cobbler 'executed' 22 August 2013
2013 Popcorn in Badger, Minnesota. Caramel, current status 'unknown'

If the rate of recidivism for these 'Turkeys' is as high as 40%
why are they being Pardoned and released?

Resort to mockery and sarcasm.

Most mentally sane and reasonably intelligent people know what is going on with unimpeded immigration and wide open borders is suicide. No other civilization in recorded history has survived such things as is now occurring in the U.S. and a select handful of other nation states.

For those interested, I'd suggest you do internet research on how other countries, such as Mexico, one of the Central American nations, or Asian countries, deal with 'undocumented' people illegally crossing their borders, or how they deal with illegal employment. Even Canada has strict laws regarding who is allowed to work in Canada, and how it affects the Canadian workforce. They even nolonger grant automatic citizenship to children born to non-citizens. The U.S. is I believe the only major nation that does this. It will be an eye opener.

Your friendly neighborhood censor here:

We don't know if this guy is an immigrant (startling but true: Even Americans can have Spanish names), but more important:

I will not be letting through any more anonymous posts about immigration. You want to get all crazy and pour your full hate on immigrants? Go find another place to do it. This is a discussion about a woman who got jumped and robbed and sexually attacked.

By all means reply to this with comments about how libruls can't stand the truth and all. Only you and I will see them.

Because I don't care.

I obviously still see a lot of value in anonymous comments: They're great for people who are here for the first time and want to jump in right now and don't want to go through the whole registration rigamarole, or people who have something to say who don't want to create an account for whatever reasons (maybe you really don't trust me, that's fine, I get it) or registered users who've misplaced their passwords or whatever.

But as my regular haters know, there are limits and I've been blocking stuff for months.

It used to bother me to delete comments. Who am I to say what's valid or not? But month after month of people (or maybe it's just one guy) constantly trying to post crap about EBT cards or immigrants or Obama every single time I report on a crime in Roxbury or Dorchester or East Boston has finally worn me down to the point where I just don't care.

I'm a crybaby librul who can't stand criticism? I don't care. I'm a godless Commie who should go live in Cuba? I don't care. I would instantly swing to your side if only some horrible violence happened to me or my family (or to the family of the person you're replying to)? Well, in that case, I still don't care, but also, fuck you.

Now that that rant is out of the way, carry on ...

the police, military, and immigration services extort, abuse, and "disappear" documented and undocumented Central American migrants regularly. Is that how you want it handled? I don't think you have the slightest notion of what this system is really like and if you did, I don't think you'd really want it implemented in the United States.

And as for "illegal employment," hahahahaha.
The informal labor market here is enormous and openly tolerated across all levels of government. I'm not saying that's right, but I am saying you are completely wrong.

What street/block/general area of Eagle Hill this happened in? I'd rather have the victims' info stay safe and anonymous, but would love some ballpark info if possible. Asking as a resident of Eagle Hill that comes home very late at least twice a week and with a GF that walks trough the neighborhood to get to and from my place.

It seems Eastie is starting to live up to the crime-related stereotypes I've always heard about but never really seen much of until this year.

Probably because the attack happened right at the victim's front door. Police were a bit vague about the earlier attack as well, only mentioning "Border Street."

I'd rather have the person be safe, so no argument against that here.

I've been super vigilant about my surroundings ever since the whole machete incident was reported, and try to be extra mindful around where things have been reported.

I lived in Eastie for man years before finally getting out -- the crime 'stereotype' is true. The real crime rate is very high; it is simply almost never reported in the media. Not sure why. This year, however, you are right - crime hasn't gone up, it is being reported more regularly. Still we saw violent crimes occurring in our neighborhood (Eagle Hill) regularly that were never reported in the media.

These types of crimes your seeing in East Boston in recent years, are done by new comers to the neighborhood, not by East Boston natives!
If you follow the arrest reports in the local East Boston times each week, 60% of the people being arrested in East Boston are from Lynn, Brockton, Malden, Medford, Revere and other blue collar towns, either they get busted for motor vehicle violations to drug dealing to breaking and enterings.
East Boston use to be like the North end everyone protected one another, today in East Boston you really don't know who your neighbors are anymore, new people move in and out every other year in the neighborhood, before you had one family living in one apartment for 30 years.
Today you have investors buying up property in Eastie and they turn the building into a hotel for airline pilots & stewardess and other Airline personel.

"in East Boston you really don't know who your neighbors are anymore, new people move in and out every other year in the neighborhood"

Close. Try every month. I have never seen so many curbside mattresses in my life.

I wouldn't rely on the media to determine the crime rate, police statistics, on the other hand, say crime is down.

Sorry, TMA, but as a 50 year EB resident I can state that 30 years ago I knew plenty of people who were criminals, and who didn't "look out for" anybody but themselves. They'd break into your house while you were at a funeral or on vacation, or just out for the day, or they'd steal anything in your yard or car, (or just steal your car) for parts.

There were also plenty of violent criminals who had no problem pulling a gun, knife or bat out at the drop of a hat. If people want to say that crime isn't reported now, that's fine, but the truth is, it never was.

What's changed? Just the names...

How about we start worrying about the safety of the women in our community than where this guy came from? Yes, I understand the idea of trying to find the root of the problem but I believe the best way to begin protecting our fellow neighbor is to play the defense. I have lived in East Boston for 5 years and am always shocked by the number of sexual assaults/rapes that go on just blocks away from my home. Very disturbing. I believe the leaders of this community need to make it their priority to make the woman of East Boston feel safe. Where do we begin?
