... Thank God my car is fuel-efficient because I can see a bi-weekly trip to New Hampshire in my future. Ah, New Hampshire ... our friendly neighbor to the north. I can almost see the delight on the faces of the Seabrook cigarette retailers now.

Her plan doesn't really bother me. I don't have a problem with higher taxes, and I don't have a lick of sympathy for smokers, I just oppose regressive taxes. IMO the commonwealth really ought to get rid of the vast majority of them -- sales taxes, legalized gambling, tolls, T fares, etc. -- and instead focus on raising revenues via progressive taxes. Although, I suppose, I could live with some regressive taxes that, in practice, tended to get tourists, such as for rental cars or hotel rooms.

I was in Illinois recently and almost had a heart attack when a clerk at CVS told me $9.56 for one pack of Salems.
Not only is there the state tax which is high but also a Cook County tax and city of Chicago tax.
Two-For-Ones
I haven't paid full price for a pack of smokes in years. If one is willing to hunt a bit, two-for-one deals can be found many places. I have three or four stores in my vicinity where I can always pick up Kools or other menthols for $6.50 or $7 for two packs. Beats driving north and it's legal.

Always funny...
...when addicts work so hard to justify their harmful addictions. It's as if they think that polluting the air and stinking up the area around them afterward are completely harmless activities so no tax should be levied on them.
Poor persecuted smokers!
Just quit smoking, addicts, and cigarette taxes won't bother you. And the rest of us will breathe more easily to boot!

Do you have no addictions whatsoever?
Do you do nothing that may inconvenience others and/or make them ill?
Do you not do anything harmful?
Do you not have anything in your life that you could stop doing in order to make this world a better place for the rest of us, and save yourself some cash to boot?
If you can truthfully answer "Yes" to all of the above, I congratulate you. If not, get down off of your high horse and... well, you and the horse.

Hadn't had a smoke in a while, so I was a bit on edge. Now I'm feeling better.
Look, it's easy enough to dispense such advice. It's also undoubtedly true that most of us are either not going to follow it or will think you're an asshole for giving it.
Yes, I'm an addict. Do you seriously think that you telling me I'm one, and blithely insulting me in the bargain, will make a positive difference?
You speak truth. Yes, we could all be much happier if we quit and didn't have to pay the taxes and also enjoy the other benefits that would accrue from not sucking in carcinogens at regular intervals. However, there is nary a single one of us so ignorant as to not be aware of those facts. So, if you have some useful information to share concerning our addictions, by all means share it. If your only contribution is to tell us what we already know, what exactly do you expect that you're accomplishing?
Ah, geez, I'm getting grouchy again. I'd better go have another. Sorry!
