Watering hole at Dorchester St. end of W. Broadway wants to sell liquor license to fancy new place at luxury end of street

The Boston Licensing Board next week hears a request from the owner of the Patriot, formerly the Blackthorn Bar, at 471 W. Broadway to sell its liquor license to Dylan Welsh, the owner of Five Horses Tavern in Davis Square and the South End, for a new restaurant at 22 W. Broadway to be called Worden Hall.

Welsh is seeking a 2 a.m. closing time for his restaurant, which would also have a 16-seat patio open until midnight.

The board's hearings begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in its eighth-floor hearing room in City Hall.

Sounds like a great idea for a new bar down at Broadway station, even though it already has Stephi's and (the soon to be closing) Franklin (to be called 142 Moonshine, or whatever).

I spent Christmas Eve at The Patriot, last week. Not much was going on, due to the holiday of course but probably also a result of the changes to the neighborhood. Love the $3 drafts. Now what's going to happen? Another Dollar store?

Rumor has it this place had turned into a frat boy hang out and we need to limit those type of places and keep the frat boys in Fenway, Allston, Brighton...etc.

Higher end places are a better fit to the neighborhood.

This is devastating news. The Thorn had sneakily become the funnest bar in Southie over the last 8-12 months. This one stings. A lot.

Too many neighborhood watering holes giving up their lic to higher end establishments.

Doesn't mean they aren't "neighborhood" bars. The neighborhood is changing.

Unfortunately my paycheck isn't changing.

When the Blackthorn opened up it was considered to be a more up and coming South Boston place and a signal the neighborhood was changing.

Please leave Roy Keane and thus Martin O'Neil alone Frank. I would not like to think your ego helped cause chaos and contribute to the loss to Scotland. Ireland in the Euro 16 would have been fun save for needing someone to sign your book.

Give the Five Horses team credit. Both Davis and the South End places are great.

Geezus, I've been so out of the Southie bar scene that news of the closing of my favorite blows over my head.

Let's give the Blackthorn its FAI due. That was the bar Keano went to after a visit to Foxboro for a friendly against, if memory serves me, the USA. Mick McCarthy was captain, not coach, at the time and was annoyed that some of the team retired on their own to tip back a few. Ten years later- Saipan!

Of course, my Keane has always been Robbie, even though he broke my Revo heart this year.

Blackthorn- a great Irish bar, a great bar overall. You'll be missed.
