Police seek killer of Dorchester man, father of seven

Ed. note: Posting about this September murder now because BPD never reported on it when it happened - I discovered this case on a BPD list of unsolved murders.

Boston Police report that Jimmy Velasquez, 49, was shot to death around 11:15 p.m. on Sept. 14 at 14 Glenarm St.

Velasquez, originally from Honduras, left his wife Catalina and seven children.

Anyone with information can contact homicide detectives at 617-343-5839 or 617-343-6426.

Any idea why they wouldn't have reported it at the time? Have you come across other murders after the fact in this way?

BPD is usually very good about reporting murders, so assuming I'm not blind and missing stuff on BPDNews, Google, the Globe site, etc., I'm going to assume it was just a slip up.

Here's the list I found it on, which I found helpful in updating the 2014 murder list with the names of victims that I had missed.

I'm sure "they reported it", in other words, a report was written.

You just didn't get a hold of it until now.

I was obviously talking as a reporter, used to seeing "reports" of crimes on BPDNews. I was not trying to cast any aspersions on detectives.

Yet you wrote they never reported it, which is completely false. They must, and did. I easily found it.

Then you commented they're "usually good about reporting murders". Not a slip on the BPD, but the journalist.

A link please. Last night, all I found was the "unsolved cases" page, so obviously I'd like to correct my report if I'm wrong.

Sorry Adam, not trying to nitpick, I just thought your editorial note was a bit misleading. Anyway, the Globe had a small blurb about it back in Decemeber which I read last night, and of course now I can't access it, but a few pages into the Google search should bring it up.

I'm just wondering if it's the BPD's responsibility to inform all journalistis of every homicide, or is it up to the news agencies to investigate it themselves? Every police station prints out a log sheet daily of the calls from the previous day. I am actually surprised at some of the calls that don't get reported in the news. Your thoughts sir?

And I was sincere in asking for a reference to it.

The Globe thing is interesting because their homicide database shows no links to a story. But even a blurb in December is a bit unusual given the poor guy was shot - and died - in September.

To be honest, the way I even got on all this was because David Bernstein, late of Boston Magazine, has been on a tear of late for the way so many of the homicides in the Globe database are still listed as "unknown male" when, in fact, most of the victims had been identified, and I figured I should go back through my own murder posts and update as many as I could, and I stumbled across this particular case.

BPD has no responsibility to inform journalists (although it's great that they do, and it makes a lot of sense). I'm not criticizing them for anything, was just a bit surprised they never said anything at all about this particular case, since, as I mentioned, they are usually very good about publicly reporting murders.

And, yes, you're absolutely right about good journalists needing to put in some legwork sometimes, because police do not report (again, publicly, through BPDNews or whatever) everything that might be of interest.

I will not pretend to be a good journalist who wears out several pairs of shoes a year, but one example of that is the thing I posted this morning about a woman getting mugged at gunpoint in Roslindale. I happened to hear it on the scanner last night, then confirmed it this morning with the online equivalent of the BPD police log - the daily incident log now available through the city's data gateway.

Believe me, you do a better job most times than even The Herald and Globe. You're the first "news" site I visit every morning. So, thank you.

The "case information" file attached to the unsolved page has a creation date of 10/8/14, so it may very well have been put online at that time, but I can't find, nor recall any effort by BPD to push the information out at that time or when the crime occurred, which is highly unusual for them, especially when they are "actively investigating" and seeking information from the public.

And if you use Google to search bpdnews.com for information about this case, the only things that come up are that report - which is not something they normally post - and the "unsolved 2014 cases" page.
