School officials wonder if they could have done more to protect students from an angry Shaun Harrison

WBUR reports on a BPS report that found school officials followed their own protocols for disciplining Shaun Harrison before he allegedly shot a student selling pot for him, but that that may not have been enough.

WBUR posted a copy of the report, which details the incident at English High School the same day as the shooting that that led officials to decide to fire him:

On March 3, 2015 it was reported that Harrison engaged in an altercation with a female student where he said to the student "I will smack the shit out of you" and pushed her. Following an investigatory meeting with the Headmaster, the recommendation was made to terminate Harrison. Harrison was terminated on March 5, 2015.

Speaking with friends in the BPS, this guy was par for the course but it would take an attempted murder to get rid of him. "The soft bigotry of low expectations" as President George W. Bush once so eloquently said.

Has that drunk arsehole cop who hijacked an Uber vehicle been fired yet? No?

Sounds like your problem is simply that BPS is acting just like BPD when it comes to actually getting rid of its bad apples.

Perhaps the problem is that those who do the investigating and firing are inside the system, no?

is that the BPD wants to fire the cop who hijacked the Uber, but BPS appears to have not wanted to terminate Harrison.

And the internal investigating angle is severely overrated. I know for a fact that the top brass in the BPD would love to fire officers like Doherty but obviously can't because of union/labor law issues. I'm sure the BPS would face the same issues if Harrison would have been up for termination as well.

If you are white and you give a negative review to a terrible black teacher in bps your career will be destroyed. I have seen it happen.

...blame the teachers union and whoever they are led by..

A guy accused of assaulting a student? Even the union has limits on who they can protect.

protected a non union management person?

Did anyone at BPS check into his background before hiring him? I suspect if they did, they didn't go back too far because if they had he would never have been hired.

This guy had problems at previous schools but rather than fire him they just moved him and probably didn't tell the headmaster at English.

This happens a lot at BPS. There is a useless computer teacher who gets into a new school and is so bad that the school has to shut down the computer department just to get rid of the teacher. And its happened to three or four schools.

Please let's not unfairly lump him in with teachers. He was a teacher's aide/counselor who somehow graduated into an administrator's role at English High.

And in the union. I assume he had to have had a college degree and license?

management when he allegedly decided to deal drugs shoot a kid in the head. What does that say about the promotion process within the BPS? A school system broken by the government in 1974 and still broken today.

"Rev" Groover (google financial scandal with his church money) Head of Boston School Committee brought Carol Johnson (under FBI investigation for financial fraud) to Boston. Later Groover said he did not know of the FBI investigation of her. Supt. Johnson places into administration positions drug/cocaine dealers, wife abusers (her family member that was rarly present at his HS because she was sending him to superintendent school) whom she was exposed in the press as lying when she repeatedly said she did not know of their "trespasses". She told wife abuser after the police called her, "You can keep your job as long as the press does not find out." Rev. Groover comes to the rescue with a highly staged scene at AME and spins the story and says basically she is sorry and no one is perfect. BPS administration and support staff were sent memos "inviting" them to the "service". If you look at the footage, you can see that most are not happy to be there and in fact those who did not want to support her went in fear of loosing her "trust" ( a characteristic criticized of her leadership style from a school committee member in her previous district - she did not surround herself with the best qualified candidates; rather those that she could "trust"). Now, Rev. Harrison, agrees to keep quiet about his son's abuse and for good behavior he is given a job in BPS by his friend Rev. Groover (they both preached at AME) and churchgoer Supt. Johnson. He pushes students, throws things at them, asks for thier numbers, yells, uses profanity; not such an annommoly in BPS administrative and support staff. One school calls for him to be fired and shockingly the response is NO. They dont' know he's connected and he will never be fired as long as he does not do anything extreme, like try to kill someone! So he is moved, repeats the behavior, moved, repeats, and then..."the press finds out". Ironically, BPS claims that he was about to be fired for ...... the same behaviors that BPS KNEW OF at three previous schools. How could Harrison be the most qualified for the Dean positon at English High School mid-year if he had all these discipline reports (McDonough said he had been appropriately disciplined but it was not terms for termination, but ironically one small incident of speaking unprofessionally to a student NOW was grounds for termination! ?) in his personel file? No one questions Supt. Johnson, under whose admin he was hired and "maintained". When Rev. Groover was questioned he began spinning with his version of "I'm shocked, shocked to know that gambling is going on in this club" response. Immediately he said he was not apart of Harrison's hiring, AME took Harrison's name off their site, and said he had gone on his way a few years ago. When the mayor questioned McDonough he spun the angle that he had bad teachers he could not get rid of; however, he had multiple grounds multiple times when Harrison was a para-professional then dean (!) He never was qualified or credentialed to be teacher, nor it seems, for religious leadership. Just as BPD did not go public with the wife abuser and drug dealers, BPD covered up the multiple calls by citizens to Harrison's apartment not counting on them to keep records of multiple communications to City Hall and BPD. Evans spun that a few calls were received and twice the area was monitored and had nothing to report. They spin and spin to preserve their public reputations and private bank accounts. The bottomline is this child who was shot is a hero. His blessed survival and subsequent testimony (along with video footage) should clean house in BPS, BPD and City Hall (pre-Marty when Harrison and his son were given jobs and protection....until Harrison's son's story of shooting "got in the press"); if not, the spin masters continue and citizens suffer. Mayor Marty Walsh, the fact that you were grazed by a bullet (maybe at the same age as this young man), means that you are in a unique position (in terms of empathy and political power) to do something about this case that will define who you are to Bostonians and beyond. Show your commitment to the citizens of Boston; make the hard choice not the easy one. Be memorable.

How did he 'somehow graduate' into an administrator level role without any qualifications?

How bad is the safety of BPS students when the actions of this fraud are overlooked as minor blips. Just look at the circus otherwise known as the MBTA when hundreds of teens act up and fight their way home because their schools ignore bullying, shakedowns and crime against students.

this guy with no background in education got hired over 50 applicants as a Dean of Academy is baffling. What a disservice to English High students and what kind of management does the school have if they are hiring such inappropriate staffers?
