Police: Girl brought pink taser, knife to school

Pink taser

An 11-year-old student at the Higginson/Lewis K-8 School on Walnut Avenue in Roxbury is facing suspension, but no criminal charges, for bringing the stun gun and a folding pocket knife to school on Wednesday, Boston Police report.

Police say the girl brought the weapons to school to impress her friends - which is what gave her away: A teacher heard the zapping sound of the taser being turned on and went to investigate.

The child is facing a suspension from school but no criminal charges have been filed at this time. School officials met with the child’s mother and set forth a mandatory plan for counseling and intervention. Officers are referring the child and her family to the department’s Youth Connect program which will provide additional services and counseling moving forward.

Police add no students were hurt.

The taser she was caught with goes for $11 on Amazon, and includes a built-in flashlight, although it's not available for shipping to Massachusetts:

As the bright electric current pulsates between the test prongs and creates an intimidating electrical sound, an attacker with any sense at all will be stopped in his tracks. If the sight and sound doesn't stop him, a jolt from this stun gun certainly will bring an attacker down! When an attacker is touched by the stun gun it will disrupt the message the brain sends to the voluntary muscles. Simply touching an attacker will deliver a high voltage shock causing loss of balance and muscle control, confusion, and disorientation bringing him to his knees and making him incapable of further aggressive activity.

that teachers can recognize the sound of a taser turning on so well. Helpful, but sad.

The crackle of electricity flowing through the air is pretty recognizable without any prior experience.

... describe the item as more of a noisemaker than a weapon:

If you want a nice noise maker, this is the ticket. If you want to physically halt someone's advance, look elsewhere. It makes a nice, loud zap when fired in the air but did nothing when used on me.

It sounds fierce but if you really need it it won't do the job you will just make someone mad

She has more weapons or protection then the School Police. Safety in our schools is a joke!

She may also refuse to be a victim of bullying that adults choose to ignore.

Or she may simply be a bully. We don't know.

I hope that there is a full investigation in to the situation, either way, that includes what is going on in her school life and the responsibilities of the adults around her under Massachusetts law.

I wonder if this child felt the need to bring weapons to school to protect herself?

I'm glad to hear that there are interventions in place, and that the mother was contacted.

More often than not this is the case. Same thing happened at my school last year (no taser but a knife) 11 year old kid had some guys giving him trouble on his way home from the bus stop so he brought a knife with him. Ended up thinking he was badass and showing it to his friends and got caught

It's what all tweens carry in their backpacks for Spring 2015!

And nothing says you mean business like a pink taser.

I think a pink Glock is even more businesslike.

You know what else has that "Distinctive gun shape"? If there were a distinctive Taser shape, Maybe there'd be a few less people accidentally shot by the police.

Not sure what point you're trying to make here. It has a gun shape because it's aimed and fires a projectile.

1) "Distinctive gun shape" is an oxymoron, unless you consider the Taser a gun. Its shape is the same as a gun's but it's not one, so the shape is not distinctive. That lack of distinction leads to my second point:

2) There have been numerous cases where a police officer has shot a prisoner to death, and afterwards said he thought he was firing his Taser. Why is the Taser shaped like a gun? It's not because it is a projectile-firing weapon; Tasers are available in un-gunlike shapes. It's because police officers are comfortable with that shape from handling their guns. I think it's a mistake to use that familiarity as a criterion for choosing non-lethal weapons.

Nitrogen propels current Taser electrodes on the same principle as a BB gun (A BB gun is also a gun). The original Tasers shot projectiles using gunpowder. It was classified a firearm in 1976 according to the BATF.

The term “firearm” as used in 18 U.S.C. 921(a)(3)(A) includes “any weapon (including a starter gun) which will or is designed to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive.” The Bureau has determined that the device is a weapon and notwithstanding the fact that the barbs and wires remain attached to the hand-held device after expulsion, these items are projectiles within the meaning of the statute. Since the projectiles are expelled by the action of an explosive, the weapon is a firearm under 18 U.S.C. 921(a)(3)(A).

All firearms are guns but not all guns are firearms.

Consult the full definition at Websters to see why a nail gun is a gun and a soldering gun is a gun.

The point remains that making it feel like a Glock (for instance) is going to make it easier for an officer under stress to mistake which weapon is in his or her hand. If it had a radically-different grip shape, or a different trigger position, or something to alert the officer, that would save some lives.

though if people like Adam are using it generically in places like this, it may be as lost a cause as Kleenex, Band-Aid, and Xerox.

A principal was badly beaten the other day, school fights happen every day on the Red Line just today a red line train was taken out of service after a brawl and school staff are terrified of moving to the new Bruce Bolling building in Dudley square. The solution put all seventh and eighth graders on the moving asylum known as the MBTA

I've been wondering when the Irving principal beating was going to make the news. I can't believe it didn't. I am getting sick and tired of the chaos descending on Rozzie Square when that middle school gets out. Passersby literally had to get involved in the melee that occured on Monday afternoon. Living near a middle school was always a bit of an annoyance, but this year things seem out of control. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more to get these kids on school buses and out of here in a timely fashion.

Please elaborate on the principal beating.

This incident was not brought on by the Irving students, nor did they " beat up " their own principal. A group of students from another school targeted a few students from the Irving who were being walked by the principal to bus stops in the village, as is regular procedure. This incident also did not stem from anything that started in the Irving school. The police were called and the situation was handled appropriately. The principal of the Irving got struck when trying to defuse the situation and protect his kids.

I asked about this incident. The reply:

There was a fight between students after dismissal and the principal intervened to break up the fight. In the process he suffered some minor injuries (scrapes, bruises) but is fine. Students involved are being disciplined according to our code of conduct.

For what it's worth, the BPD log shows "fight" shortly after 4 p.m. at Cummins and Florence.

School staff being "terrified" to move Dudley has nothing to do with kids fighting on the MBTA and everything to do with them sitting around scaring each other with exaggerated stories of Dudley from the 90s.

The article states the taser was brought to school to show off. Maybe that's true.

This kid was just trying to be cool. Laughing pretty hard at mandatory counseling.

Most school bullies are going to do a lot more damage with their words and fists than a taser can inflict, for reals.

It's Bully Theater to carry a stun gun.
While words and fists may cause more long-term damage, the intimidation factor of a wielded stun gun does have its merits. And the cool factor too.
Look out for those wearing PINK on the rear of their pants.
Especially if it has an iPhone 6 holster.
