Mayor, police commissioner try to reassure Roslindale businesspeople the neighborhood remains safe

UPDATE: The Globe reports Rahim and that guy up in Everett were planning to try to behead a police officer. Wright is scheduled for arraignment in federal court at 3:30 p.m.

Wicked Local Roslindale reports Mayor Walsh and Police Commissioner William Evans attended last night's scheduled meeting of the Roslindale Board of Trade down at the Sons of Italy that they could go to sleep secure that the neighborhood was not under any sort of threat following yesterday's fatal confrontation in the CVS parking lot (which led the nightly newscasts on ABC, CBS and NBC).

Good on the mayor and commissioner for coming out last night and being proactive.

I'm sure it's good for the politicians to issue the reassurance, but the revelation that a possible terrorist lived in the neighborhood is pretty low on my list of things that make me concerned about safety. Traffic is still way above everything else in my view.

He was a TERRORIST!!!1!1 TERRORIST!!!1!1one

That shows why we have to renew the Patriot Act IMMEDIATELY!

That includes right wing racist hate crimes.

Drivers kill tens of thousands of people a year.

Certain regions of the world like Central Africa, North Africa, Micronesia, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent beg to differ.

"Right wing" violence is a joke. It's almost always Maoist/Marxist/Communist or religious groups getting their murderboners on.

up
Voting closed 0

Like the ones where Scott Lively has been instigating hate crimes on a massive scale?

If we are talking about certain parts of the world included here, explain why that asshat walks free after all the murder and torture he's responsible for in certain regions of the world?

up

And which side of the political spectrum do those "religious groups" tend to fall on?

Do you have any evidence that terrorists kill more people than traffic accidents, anywhere in the world?

Would you want to be the neighbor of one of these guys making these kind of threats? Do you want your kids to have to worry about living near these guys? People with these kinds of intentions have a sick mind, sick heart and sick soul.

up
Voting closed 0

BE VERY AFRAID!!!!!

... and give up all your civil liberties right now!

Sorry, but the kids in my neighborhood - and pretty much every neighborhood - are at far greater risk of being run down by an inattentive driver than being involved in anything of the sort you describe.

A sense of proportion is generally a helpful thing when it comes to risk assessment.

our female children in this country are more likely to be be raped, have an act of violence perpetrated on them, or killed by an American male, than fall victim to a terrorist act by anybody. Should we instill fear in the hearts of our children, have them worry about living near men in our neighborhoods? fear the sick minds of the sick American men potentially living next door?

Americans are as likely to be killed by their own TV or furniture as by acts terrorism. Should we go minimalist extreme in our households and give up watching TV (for that reason)? by the way, I actually have been the neighbor of terrorists. I do not make these statements in any way to diminish the suffering that victims and their familes endure but merely for some perspective.

People need to stop tip toeing around this issue. This is where perceived "tolerance" becomes "ignorance".

I mean, c'mon, the Big Dig is done so driving around Boston is a breeze now. The Silver Line light rail has reconnected Roxbury and the South End to Downtown. Plus; we have late-night MBTA service--more people taking the T, less traffic!

In case you weren't around two years ago, terrorism is front-and-center now. It's not like there are parts of Boston where people live in daily fear of their drug dealing/illegal-weapon-possessing neighbors getting into a nobody-can-aim-so-hopefully-no-bystander-gets-hit firefight with their enemies two streets over--c'mon, that doesn't exist.

And even if it did--what do you want--Walsh and Evans to show up at community meetings in those neighborhoods and reassure those residents that their neighborhoods are safe?! They're still trying to figure out how to get back all those 9000 complaints from this past winter--you know, about un-shoveled sidewalks and stuff. Isn't Jackson already on it anyway? I thought I saw him on Blue Hill Ave handing out crisp $100 bills as part of his Stop-the-Violence Campaign.

Safe now that the threat has been eliminated. Great job law enforcement.

And say the neighborhood was safe even before yesterday morning, given that the guy was already under 24-hour surveillance.

If you were a police officer you'd be feeling a little less safe than usual, in any neighborhood of Boston..

The FBI and Boston police shot and killed a knife-wielding Roslindale man known for extremist views and arrested another person at an Everett home yesterday as part of an anti-terrorism task force investigation into threats to behead law enforcement officials, the Herald has learned.

Gee, I'm a Belmont man known for my extremist views! Where's my surveillance?

And of course, ole blood and guts Adriana Cohen sees this as proof that those who want to the Patriot Act gone are fools, FOOLS I SAY! Locked away safely in her tony Concord manse, Cohen managed bravely to get this column out while hiding under tastefully appointed dining room set!

Islamist extremism is literally in our backyard now, as evidenced by the Roslindale man who was shot down yesterday after he attacked two members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force with a military knife.

Born and grew up in NYC and Boston. NEVER knew anyone who gave $ to the IRA. My Irish (Catholic) born mom loathed them, and was always upset when some bombing occurred and people died or had limbs blown off, regardless of who they were. My Irish relatives(from the republic, the south) all hated them, said they were nothing more than a mix of radical Marxists and organized criminal syndicate.

The British government has created this propaganda that Americans of Irish descent all, or most, supported the IRA, and the IRA got most of their $ thru fundraising in America, all untrue. And we know now that they were heavily infiltrated, and much of the violence and bombings were even committed by agents of the British government intelligence services. This is a fact. Northern Ireland became a very important part of the British military-industrial complex.

And as a point of reference, the 'Unionist' actually killed more people than the IRA.

Voting closed 0

Yes, the IRA funded their operations through many means, including smuggling and protection rackets. Alas, you could pretend that NORAID didn't exist, but it did.

As far as most of the Republican violence being done by supergrass agents, no. I have distant relatives who were so well known as bomb makers that when cross border, cross sectarian initiatives were started, my uncle's wife had to distance herself from them (even though we didn't know them) due to the family name. This side of the family were and continue to be pro-Treaty, being Fine Gael supporters to the end. And since Continuity are still an issue, believe that there are republicans who had no problems killing an RUC officer or a member of Her Majesty's Army, along with randomly planting bombs to keep everyone on edge.

We're talking about a terrorist plot to kill people, and you're making jokes and downplaying the incident like it's some overblown, insignificant thing. Feel free to weigh in with a well reasoned post at any time. It will be your first.

We're talking about a terrorist plot to kill people,

Unless I've missed something, there's exactly zero evidence to indicate any such plot. If any emerges subsequently, I'll bet a nickel it will be another of these FBI sting operations where they entice some fucked-up loser to plan a "plot" that he never would have considered otherwise.

up
Voting closed 0

Unless of course they can produce hard evidence that this man was actively involved in terrorist plots. I want surveillance notes, videos, all possible evidence that this man was a "terrorist" other than the say so from the guys who still won't tell us who shot Dic Donahue.

Oh, wait, you can't provide that evidence due to "national security concerns" and "possibly letting the terrorists know how we keep tabs on them" so, you know, fuck it.

This incident clearly isn't the only proof. Considering the military emails all returning soldiers warning of Isis' call to all muslims to attack any and all uniformed officers (public safety and military) in America in as public a fashion as possible (swinging a hammer at an officer's head, perhaps), I'd say the threat is real (to the military) and should be to us.

But you'd rather take this instance as an excuse to bash republicans who acknowledge the threat until someone carries out the threat. Once the threat is carried out successfully and we have a dead officer, I'm sure you'll rise to the occasion and contribute as much you possibly can by tweeting "#thoughtsandprayers to the family" and feel good about yourself until the next threat that you can laugh off rises to the surface.

How is the military e-mailing soldiers telling them that ISIS are murderous criminals who encourage others to be murderous criminals, evidence of a significant domestic threat?

Yeah, bad guys sometimes murder cops. Also taxi drivers and liquor store clerks.

On the whole, measured by the percent of human lives that end in violence, the world is a safer place than it has ever been in human history. People who want you to be scared, in general, have an agenda that may not align with your best interests.

Once again, God Bless our BPD and FBI. My understanding is that this Muslim extremist planned on decapitating a uniformed officer. Prevention is better than cure. Strong work, officers. May your courage and your bravery be widely known!

There is a link posted in one of these comments that explains your skepticism. It literally discusses how this guy was planning to decapitate cops... That would explain the 24 hour watch he was placed under the HUGE knife he had on him... Do you really think this was a mistake on the FBI's end? Is that knife legal? Tell me...

who obviously forgot how to shoot a suspect in the knee.

up

How about shooting the eight inch knife from his hand? Or the old reliable "flesh wound" we used to see on the Lone Ranger tv show. Or even better, a Hopalong Cassidy trick shot ricocheting off the car mirror causing it to blind him just long enough so Lassie the Wonder Dog tackle him!

Yeah, what the hell is wrong with the BPD?

up
Voting closed 0

dvd, the rigorous police academy training that you pay for includes several weeks at the firing range. Officers are trained to shoot for "center mass" not the knee. When lethal force is required, the goal is to stop and end the threat. Local police and federal agents did their job in this case.

up
Voting closed 0

but in this case apparently the LEO's were far enough away from the suspect that a kill shot was not warranted against someone not carrying a firearm. I was not there so I don't know 100%, but is sounds to me that a good shot could have stopped him without killing him the same way a billy bat to the knee would have saved Eric Garner.

up
Voting closed 0

However, that was no pocket knife he was carrying but a knife that if plunged into your body will kill you. So, how long do you wait to shoot before that knife gets too close?

Easier to hit the assailant and more importantly to stop the assailant intent on stabbing you by shooting at the assailant's chest than at a leg.

Ill try to find it, but there is a good video of a man (bad guy) shot multiple times that continued to attack the person he was attacking (I can't even remember if it were cops or not). If you shoot at limbs, you have a chance at missing too, and that means innocent people may get shot or killed.

In the end, cop or citizen: you have the right to shoot someone in the chest or center mass if they charge you with a knife. You don't have to try to aim at hard targets (arms and legs) to see if you can maim them before they get a chance to kill you.

up

that a non lethal shot leaves a live informant, and not a literal dead end.

up
Voting closed 0

They have a live informant. His name is David Wright.

Anything more you'd like?

up
Voting closed 0

Either deadly force is warranted or it's not.

If it's not warranted, your weapon stays in its holster.

If it's warranted, you point your weapon at the attacker's center of mass and keep squeezing shots off until the threat is ended.

Shooting in the knees is Hollywood bullshit.

up
Voting closed 0

I'd like to see a police officer, let alone an armchair use-of-force expert such as you, shoot a moving target the size of a kneecap while scared for their life. You're far more likely to miss, hit a bystander, or get yourself killed for not shooting at "center of mass", as they train you.

But there's something truly disturbing about this whole thing, including the brother's FB post which attempts (desperately? as part of a deliberate plan?) to turn the tables and rouse sympathies by trying to paint it as an example of anti-black police brutality. I'm waiting for video and more information before leaping to any conclusions but it's very sinister.

up

He might simply be lashing out as part of his grief. How many of us, if told that a loved one attacked a cop would immediately conclude that had to be the truth?

up
Voting closed 0

But he seems to come out swinging with a particularly provocative account of what happened that can be confirmed by no one and would seem to be countered by the video. And the "shot in the back" and "I can't breathe" seem both--at this point--incredible and designed to fit a certain narrative. Again...withholding judgment until we know more but I think I can safely say that if this were my brother I would NOT be making these kinds of pronouncements on Facebook.
