Two dead in North End car crash

Stanley Staco reports it happened around 3 a.m. at Commercial and Charter streets. A third person was taken to the hospital in bad shape. WCVB reports a BMW convertible rolled over. Boston Police add:

Officers observed three victims - a 27-year-old male and a 21-year-old male were both pronounced deceased at the scene. The third victim, a 21-year-old male, was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

rich kids and their fast toys can be a dangerous thing

Just because someone can afford a lease payment on a BMW convertible doesn't make them rich. It makes them 27 and has a job which pays three times the minimum wage.

That being said, this is one of the worst comments I have ever seen posted here. Somebody's children are dead from what appears to be stupidity. There is no need for gloating you pinhead.

Looks like people agree with him 75:1 over you. Maybe turn off the computer, go into a quiet room and be honest with yourself..... Is this the life you'd hoped to lead?

or in other instances, bicycle/motorcycle helmets, or conspicuous clothing?

In crashes, cars offer tremendous protection, as long as one is still inside them. Even a convertible in a roll-over, with their strong A-pillars acting as roll bars. Needless suffering has occurred. Buckle up people.

Condolences to the families of the victims and best wishes to the survivor and their family.

Neither of the two linked reports says anything at all about seat belt use.

It's a very reasonable assumption to say the individuals were not wearing their seatbelts, the chances of three people being ejected out of a belted seat are pretty dang low.

WCVB does have a mention of all three being ejected from the vehicle, which tends to happen a lot more when there is no seatbelt use.

Regarding two of the victims who were lying in the street, a neighbor at the crash site said to the Globe

It looked like they were crossing the street. The way they were lying it didn’t look like they were ejected from the car

It's sad and ironic that the BMW's registration plate is MADE IT -- a successful young person's life now destroyed, seatbelt or not.

7/10 overall in the 2015 Contrarian Concern Troll Competition:

Self-righteousness 10/10: stunning work here, really, preemptively calling out people for saying you're a victim-blamer, when all you did was blame some victims. It wouldn't have been terribly self-righteous had you said something more neutral - say, 'it appears this tragedy could have been avoided if the passengers were wearing their seatbelts, lets hope more young drivers begin to take safety seariously." But that comment's subject...man...it's a real masterpiece of trollcraft.

Logical consistency of 'argument' 7/10: not too bad, since it does seem seat belts were relevant, and it's certainly true that they save lives. I mean, saying a car offers "tremendous" protection in a crash is a stupid thing to say, and only true if "tremendous" = "significantly more protection than your clothes," but you know.

Controversy-stoking 4/10: this is the weakest part of your performance, since nobody gets up in arms these days about wearing seat belts. Suggestion: if you said that the BPD needs to treat reckless drivers as serious criminals, not only would you blame the victims even more, you'd actually piss off more UHubbers, so it's a win-win!

Overall 7/10: decent work for UHub, but kid, you ain't never gonna make it to the big leagues (Boston Herald's Disqus community, Twitchy, etc)

Cars do offer tremendous protection. Its the number one rule in car racing after a crash and the vehicle is still on the track: "Stay in the car". This applies to highways too. If getting out, get behind the Armco for protection. This is even for racers who are still protected with helmets, so those not wearing helmets need the protection of a car all the more.

Government public health agencies have already done campaigns on seat belt use and smoking cessation. Motorcycle helmet wearing and bicycle helmet wearing has resistance. The idea that pedestrians try to wear clothing that makes them more visible crossing the street (at night) is really controversial here despite police, fire, EMS, construction, sanitation, landscaping, utility, towing, trucking, plowing etc. workers wearing them for decades.

The circumstantial evidence that the three former car occupants were not wearing seat belts was far stronger, via ejection, than an accident reconstruction report in hand proving excessive speed. So, the lessons of the morning is wear your seat belt and stop with with the "victim blaming" shaming crap. As I pointed out before, you would not hesitate to blame victims of lung cancer if they happened to have smoked cigarettes in their lifetime, not that its your fault because doctors and public health officials practice such victim blaming themselves.

The reason we are told to stay on our car is because they offer tremendous protection? I'm pretty sure it's because they are lethal as shot and drivers are typically oblivious to anything 1' out of the lane

Is victim blaming so inappropriate when at least one of the victims is, you know, at fault?

That's not the same thing as saying anyone "deserves" this, it's still an awful tragedy. But I don't think it's rushing to judgment to say that the driver and likely the passengers were not exercising proper care. Cars are dangerous, especially when you act like they aren't.

Being involved in a deadly car crash is bad enough but to hurt others because of your bad behavior (speeding, racing, DUI) is 100x worse. Driving a car is a big responsibility. Learn from a tragedy like this.

The self righteous comments that people feel compelled to write in response to the comments they find "disrespectful" are the worst. It is like they have never been on the internet before.

The crash was in front of the Eliot School and the funeral home. Very upsetting for the kids to see the wreckage. I spoke with a cop who was one of the first on the scene. He tried to give CPR to one of the victims. The victim's head was split open and no chance of surviving.

Nobody's head was split open at all. The only thing you got right was the location.

It makes me sick to see what people post about people that dont even know, he was a co-worker of mine and has been for the last 4+ years. He was a successful man in our company, it will not be the same here.

I am surprised that you are defending someone who clearly was responsible for the death of such a wonderful young man and the destruction of the life of another.
