NYTimes:

Support for Boston 2024 Olympic Bid Slips to 39% of the people

BOSTON — More bad news arrived Wednesday for the boosters of Boston’s bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics: A new poll shows that just 39 percent of voters statewide support the bid, while 49 percent oppose it.

... I need one immediately.

How long until the IOC sues for "infringing" on their logo?

From my graphic design background, switching the colors around and maybe making the rings into "no" symbols would satisfy the "parody" concept of fair use?

But that would not prevent the IOC from mobilizing their hordes of lawyers and filing lawsuits, which the bumper sticker maker would have to either defend or surrender to. Being in the right doesn't protect you from lawsuits, it just usually protects you from giving in -- if you can afford your own lawyers.

Aside from liberal yuppies most neighborhood people I've talked to are all for it.

That aside, I'm indifferent. My benefit of taxation stops at roads and snow removal. I'm not crazy, I only have a single kid in BPS and its at Latin.

So the appropriation of funds doesn't really bother me. What, its taking away from parklets and bike lanes. Big deal.

economically devastated

the educated liberals are the ones who are driving the business around here. otherwise this would be detroit already, from the corruption and loss of relevance.

I agree with you. It's also true that opposition to Boston 2024 is bipartisan.

I've been seeing mostly career concern trolls from both sides of the aisle... there's the left-wing people who jump around from issue to issue (seriously - where's the outrage over the Boston grand prix? that's far more detrimental than the olympics) and right wing people who are trying to trojan horse their issues like taxes and charter schools. the rest are the usual whiners who complain about "traffic" and "parking" when they could just as easily ride a bike or take the T.

I bet if someone from the olympic committee accidentally farts at a meeting it's going to show up on the juvenile no-boston 2024 twitter feed.

The Grand Prix might be a mess for a weekend but doesn't involve using the levers of state and city government to possibly seize private land for ultimately private development.

In this case, the end result of the games appears to be that some swaths of public land and private land (Widdett circle, etc...) will likely be turned over to the games for their stadium and housing, and then that land will be turned over to developers to build on, not at market rates. It's like offering to run a tag sale on someone's driveway where you then own their driveway afterwards. I also don't have any faith that the games won't run over budget leaving the state and city on the hook for it, with minimal benefit.

I'd be fine with the Winter Olympics as there is so, so much less infrastructure required but that would be a regional bid with NH.

is one weekend in an entirely non-residential area. The impact on anyone not in that area is zero, unless it interrupts the Silver Line service.

There are 42 condos and over 100 apartments with garages that empty onto D Street. Indy Car was unaware of this. Not to mention it traps residents of Waterside Place. It also will cost the city $millions to bring the roads up to course standards and lastly the set up and tear down takes a month....

I always say that people think that polls showing their opinion are great while polls showing their opinion to be unpopular are bunk, but statistics are statistics. Poll the Universal Hub and support is probably at 10% and has been there since, oh, 2013.

My gut is that Boston2024 has suffered from poor PR, with the erosion beginning with the snow debacle and rolling along with transparency problems and a lack of ability to articulate why people should want it. And of course people like me having concerns about the costs to the public.

I'm curious to see if the reboot of the proposal will move the approval numbers upward. I would imagine if they started to run TV ads, things would go up.

My hope is that the cynicism leads to a stronger bid. And of course my prediction is that if I really want to see tennis in the 2024 Olympic Games, I will be heading off to Europe that summer.

"My gut is that Boston2024 has suffered from poor PR, "

You can go and buy the extra large Costco size PR. There still isn't enough PR in that bucket to slap on your pig and make it not a pig.

And somehow tourists feed the furry rodents on the Common but still think that rats are gross. Trust me, good PR will over the numbers. Perhaps not to 50% approval, but my gut is that this reboot will move the numbers.

Also, as others noted, spreading out the Olympics in Massachusetts has the approval of the majority of the public.

Olympiads are about host cities. The state, province, oblast or duchy has nothing to do with it. The Oslo bid was sunk by low approval among Oslo citizens, not Norwegians..

That's all you need to sink it. The scattershot desperation siting antics are just gravy elements for the fail process.

To someone like Thomas Bach and colleagues, it looks like... "The locals are hating it and the set up is idiotic."

It is much larger. https://goo.gl/maps/gIQyY

And it has ready to convert contiguous space. They are planning on using a whole island on the Elbe.

Everything will be in one place. Boston can't do that. Real estate value and the white hot speculations that rise from it undermine the whole thing better than any number of opponents could.

It still boils down to a frantic attempt to jam 10 pounds of crap into a 5 pound bag. Part of the ongoing comedy of this stupid conceit abortion is watching these assholes scramble to find weird little nooks and crannies to shove various elements.

The overlords and poohbah retainers are flatly incapable of understanding this fundamental structural problem and are half plastered from all the Can Do fumes they've been huffing.

Love how the reporter makes clear that WBUR isn't one of the National Public Radio, um, newspapers or something..

You missed the part of the same poll that found 51 percent would support hosting the Olympics if they were held statewide.

https://www.wbur.org/2015/06/10/wbur-statewide-olympics-poll

But I guess that's par for the course here.

We may as well poll for approval in Rhode Island or Alaska.

The only poll numbers that matter are from impacted areas, where it is tanking. Hamburg did its polling out of the gate without bullshit dodges, got great numbers and has appropriate contiguous space.

When Thomas Bach compares that to a venue where the locals have high opposition numbers and the thing is a discontinuous scattershot mess in a cheapskate city with sub par infrastructure, the decision will be a no brainer.

I wonder if adding Dorchester, New Bedford, Billerica and Springfield venues would move public opinion the way the poll suggests it will.

Also, in todays Globe Pags sais "Yes we need the public to guarantee cost overruns but trust us." I'm not sure the WBUR takes that into account.

The fact remains the majority of the games and the disruptions would be in Boston. I think Bostonians should have a say and I'm guess more than half would say no. Councilor Josh Zakim has a non-binding referendum that would do just that. Tell Linehan and Walsh you want a vote.
