Boston City Council speaks as one: It's time for BPD to patrol the streets of the Seaport

The City Council voted unanimously today to support this year's version of legislation that would give Boston Police joint jurisdiction over the streets of the South Boston waterfront, now legally under the purview of State Police.

At-large Councilor Stephen Murphy, who chairs the council's public-safety committee, said passing the legislation would prove important not only to give the residents and workers in what is no longer just docks and parking lots the police protection they pay for and expect, but would prove an important precedent for Massport land in East Boston and Charlestown, which could soon also face the same jurisdictional issues.

“If that enabling law remains in effect, then Boston Police will be pushed out of that area as well,” Murphy said. “We’ve won awards [for BPD work]. We’ve been heralded nationally. There’s no good reason why in Boston in 2015, the Boston Police department cannot have shared concurrent jurisdiction.”

Murphy's committee held a hearing on the legislation on Monday. As usual, State Police did not attend.

Seaport is better off under state police jurisdiction. Its a high end area of Boston. After all the Seaport is just like all the Tunnels,128 /95 , Revere beach, storrow drive, Memorial drive, Lynn beach, Swampscott beach, Wollestan beach , Quincy 95 north south.all under state police jurisdiction..

What does this even mean?

But they don't take reports for incidents that happen in the buildings on those roads.

I agree with you, Pete nice, if there is a crime at kowloon route one Saugus , saugus Police dept respond. State police cruise up and down route one but they do not respond to crimes that are committed at commercial buildings along route one, they may assist but thats it.

The Seaport has new residential and commercial development. The other areas you list, don't.

And, Quincy Shore Drive/Wollaston Beach, state and Quincy police share jurisdiction, like what should happen at the Seaport.

I think the Staties should patrol the seaport district, they do a fine Job keeping logan airport safe, and when it comes down to traffic issues at logan, they are top notch, try double parking at a logan terminal.
After all 99% of the residents at the seaport district all have high wages, realistically most of the crime committed in Boston are from low income bracket neighborhoods.Living at the seaport is probably like living in Weston, Mass when it comes to crime.
Massachusetts state police probably have increased patrols on the seaport over the years, partly due to population growth. Im pretty sure the staties patrol that area by bicycles . By the way that area also serves international cargo from ships.

I bet Weston is patrolled by Weston police. Seaport is part of Boston, and would be better served by Boston police.

Congrats on your classism, though.

“We’ve won awards [for BPD work]. We’ve been heralded nationally.....". Calling the Gang Unit officer that shot Officer Dic Donohue a hero and parading him around the White House doesn't count.

Lets look at this logically, the seaport has no crime but soon we will have hundreds of troopers, Boston Police and Massport officers patrolling the mean streets of the seaport district protecting the rich and powerful. Meanwhile a solitary Transit cop patrols Ruggles or Dudley station protecting the poor and powerless.
