Roslindale playground could get one of the longest slides in the Boston area

City officials last week showed off their latest plans for the Fallon Field playground upgrade that would include a 25-foot slide down the side of the park's hill and what would be Roslindale's first playground water-spray area, Roslindale Wants to Play reports.

The centerpiece of this new design is a large climbing structure located at the top of the slope. The base of this structure is a climbing net that will provide a challenge even to older children, while giving younger children a goal to work up to. At the top of this structure is a “sky cabin”, from which a slide will run all the way to the bottom tier of the playground.

The city hopes to begin construction next spring.

sounds pretty badass

Back when I was a kid. It was a spiral, but the stairs up would either cause or cure a fear of heights.

Of course, I was looking at this slide through the eyes of an 8 year old, so it may have been shorter. In any event, on behalf of Waquiot Jr, I can't wait.

This slide will be higher than anything that's at Larz Anderson now. If they built a slide into that hill, though...

I have no idea if there are higher slides than this elsewhere (Robbins Farm Park in Arlington seems likely), and I don't even know the exact height in this design, but I'm confident in saying that it will be one of the highest around.

I hope Waquiot Jr loves it.

And it still is an awesome park. All I could to it regale my folk with tales of the very high slide.

The next trip to Larz Anderson will involve rolling down the large hill. Ah, the memories.

My most interesting takeaway from the new plans is that the playground area will basically double without taking away from almost all of the other uses (I would say all, but someone must use that spot of grass for something) in the park. Cool.

Yes, Larz Anderson did have a high swirly slide, that probably had 7-9 swirls? I have never seen a slide that tall since it was taken down.

Edit: Probably 5 or 6 swirls, I'm also not remembering it correctly.

Robbins Farm Park in Arlington has a 50-foot slide. Where are the other long slides around in this area?

When you say a slide is 25-foot, or 50-foot, are you measuring the height or the length (slope) ?

I found this blog post that lists some long slides around Boston. That post only has four slides near Boston, though, and the one in Stoughton doesn't really look all that tall to me.

There are slides that are fairly tall in the Franklin Park Zoo's playground (which, of course, requires admission), and there's a somewhat tall slide at Skyline Park in Brookline, too. I think the slide at Fallon Field will be taller than either of those by a fair amount, though.

If anyone here can add to the list I'd love to know about any others.

While I like everything about this new plan, it seems like they are eliminating the baseball diamond. Is it really used that little that it can go and no one cares? (I honestly don't know...I think my son had one little league game there a few years back.)

Until the field literally goes to the dogs.

It looks like the expansion will be over by South and Walter Streets, so up the hill from the ball fields. Also, the newly remodeled street hockey court, along with the tennis court and basketball courts will remain.

The drawings only show a small corner of the park. I've seen confusion about this elsewhere, too, so I made a crude overlay of the rendering onto Google's satellite view of the park. The playground renovation will leave plenty of room for all of the existing courts and the baseball field.

Every time I look at the renders, I have to think through the positioning a bit, this image definitely makes it easier to see. This playground is really going to deliver Fallon as a first tier recreational facility. It's a lot smaller than some of Boston's other recreational parks, but a lot is packed in to the small footprint. And best of all, my kids and I can walk there!

Public service notice: *Never* take your child down a slide on your lap!

Parents think they're keeping their kids safe by sliding with them, but this is a very common cause of broken legs. If the kid's sneaker catches the edge of the slide, the weight of the adult forces the kid's leg into a bad position.
