From the shitbox gypsy livery cabs out front to the almost Lynchian customer base.

Here's a thought: no one would think twice to bother this idiot at the Central Square Shaw's because, well, people there have other things to worry about.

That being said, imagine if this yutz tried walking around the Fresh Pond Whole Foods with that vest on?

But it would probably be bewildering and awful for him. The residue of the southern rock hey day may be an alternate explanation for the sleeveware, which is common in old New Hampshire mill towns.

Example A: Lynyrd Skynyrd :https://youtu.be/QxIWDmmqZzY

Example B Charlie Daniels https://youtu.be/Hl6u5DJvnEg

I think of it as examples of remnant cultures like the blue collar country music scene around here.

I personally don't care for the idiom but it correlates well with Mountain Dew and the costume.

That's my neighborhood grocery, and I see WAY more nutjobs downtown. But punching down is always easier than punching up, isn't it? Good job.

.....they'd be too conflicted to react at all:

What's this? A Latino wearing rebel garb? I certainly hope he doesn't work for the landscaping company that does OUR yard!

Oh wait, you see he's from SOUTH America, who are we to judge?

What makes you think he's Latino?

You'll see some questions or theories about why he might be Latino.

As a customer of that Shaws myself however, would say he might be Latino just on the law of averages. A very large percentage of the clientele at that Shaws is indeed Latino. Better odds than buying a lottery ticket, that's for sure.

If he did seem like he was not from around here, people would gently try to engage him on why he thought that was appropriate, or if he mistakenly thought it was a US flag.

if you spend some time in that Shaw's, the makeup is mainly Latino, with a peppering of the old local color that likes to either drink or shootup behind the place. Or he was a delivery driver from New Hampshire. A lot of those coming through also.

No one there cares about a Confederate flag, most people there are more concerned with surviving and don't get upset about flags until World Cup.

it looked like he was leaning on a stack of Mountain Dew. But the writing was Coke, in Dew colors. Mountain Dew was more congruent with his demographic of Duck Dynasty couture, tricking my mind into that first impression. Interesting to me, anyways.

I didn't know this product existed. I've never seen it on this side of the river.

The vast majority of people are not clued into ever day news. Particularly so, the further down the socioeconomic scale you go. I see this every day of the week at my local Walmart.
These people sit at home eating cheese puffs and drinking beer while watching Duck Dynasty. They couldn't tell you who their senator is, let alone know about a shooting in Charleston.

That flag was a symbol of treason and racist hate long before any shooting in Charleston; you don't need to be clued into current events to know that.

The Confederacy had already created itself -- and its President demanded that the fort be captured -- rather than allowing it to surrender peacefully in a week or so, when it ran out of food. The Confederacy felt it needed a war -- to allow it to expand the domain of slavery -- over the objections of majorities in the disputed territories.

Boston is running out of pedants, I know where to come for my fix.

Wikpedia describes it differently:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Fort_Sumter

Regardless of who fired the first shot at Fort Sumter (or even at Lexington Green), the war came down to one side wanting to leave, and the other side wanting them to stay.

Give credit where it's due. Charleston shootings and flag issues have ignited the race-baiters, the bold and trashy to dust off their racist gear and dare anyone in public to challenge their freedom of speech. Charleston has everything to do with the reality in America.

I want to find a an old post of mine relating to July 4th fireworks viewing locations. Swirlygirl had mentioned a park north of the city which was a good spot. I responded to her but I can't find a way to pull up my old posts. Does anyone know how to retrieve my posting history? I feel like I must be missing something obvious.

Thanks so much!

Unfortunately, that doesn't work for old posts. There was some tweaking of the settings a few months back that cleared out everybody's history.

Can I ask a question? Is this guy Latino? It's hard to tell by the photo.

I only ask because I do live nearby (in Chelsea) and every so often I'll see Latino guys wear confederate flag stuff (hats, shirts, and vests like this).

I have to question whether they understand what that flag really means and stands for. I don't think they do, because if they did I bet they wouldn't wear it.

if you see someone wearing some logo or symbol that doesn't make sense for who they are, it's either a gang symbol or a culturally-clueless thriftstore find.

I've heard a lot of stories about confused immigrant grandmas buying "cute bunny" items for kids, not realizing that the Playboy Bunny is a special kind of logo bunny. I've also seen Boston-born-and-raised young men walking around in matching Florida Marlins hats and teal shirts who probably couldn't find Florida on a map if you offered them $100, but probably do know how to fence a stolen iPhone.

I go to that Shaw's, and the clientele there is not to be believed. People in there seem to be walking around in some sort of daze or haze. They are likely overmedicated, among other things. One time when I was in there a person defecated on the floor. I am serious about this. The staff seemed more bemused than annoyed. they've seen it all before.

or Central American. Very common in the southwest, don't know about the southeast. Western style clothes, boots, hats are of course also common.

I've lived and worked with Central Americans and Mexicans for many years, from the Midwest, Mass, Mexico to Central America and I can't remember a single one using the Confederate flag in any way. And you can find some crazy random stuff for sale on the streets of Mexico City. Saw an Amherst College t-shirt for sale at a street stall the other day. Almost bought it just for funsies.

I´ve seen portly middle aged men wearing "xyz University Women's Volleyball/Field Hockey/Swimming" t-shirts plenty of times. A few months ago, at a lovely neighborhood café, I saw a family come in and sit down with their small, innocent child, who was wearing an otherwise adorable child-sized Grumpy Cat backpack that also happened to, for some reason, be plastered in large letters reading "F#CKERS" (without the pound sign)

Never a Confederate flag that I can remember north or south of the border. It would be really, really, muy surprising to me.
