So how many renowned journalists work at Harvard?

And is the number who are so full of themselves they actually call themselves "renowned" even smaller than that? The question arises because of this Craigslist ad:

A renowned Harvard-based journalist, author and entrepreneur is seeking an entry-level Research and Administrative Assistant to support him and his growing team. The position is based in Harvard Square, and offers the right candidate a competitive salary as well as the opportunity to be a vital team member in multiple projects -- including an upcoming podcast on politics and public affairs, a brand new technology startup, and ultimately our quest to save the world!

Among the requirements:

  • Can cultivate an environment of efficiency in the midst of a transformational vs "steady state" working environment.
  • No special technical skills needed, but must be technologically proficient; able to organize and ensure effective conference calls, Skype sessions, etc.

Any guesses on who the shy, self-effacing scribe is?

H/t Hillary

Hillary, as noted above, gets the props for finding this gem.

Cannibal Holocaust. How much does the job pay?

I'm bored with just driving run of the mill Wharton CEO's and would love to break into the fast paced and well paying world of kowtowing to Harvard based ones.

Looks like severe self importance with a touch of the sophomoric as the closing tone saves the world.

And the jumble of tangentially related aims and missions vaguely stated looks like it was written by someone who could use a bit of Adderall.

I sense a hectoring fuss budget, probably with some OCD. Nearly every 'flee' or 'avoid' signal that I'm capable of lights up and it's on Dregslist, no less.

Neiman fellowships specifically prohibit you from working while you're on them.

It sounds a lot like someone attempting to leverage a present or previous credential for profile. It also sounds like someone with a good understanding of Harvard's publicity code, since they're technically not directly affiliating themselves according to that.

My money's on someone loosely associated with the Berkman Center or the Kennedy School.

Please leave a message as the CEO may be performing brain surgery, fronting a rock band, or driving a race car into a mountain.

No lectroids need apply.

•No special technical skills needed, but must be technologically proficient

Isn't that a contradiction right there?

It's saying you don't need special technical skills, but you do need the general baseline technical skills needed to reach the level of "proficiency."

You can use MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint but don't have to know how to use Access. :P

It's a member of the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative. That's a Harvard sponsored think tank where CEO's and other business leaders are involved in a six month stay here where they work on projects and can audit classes.

Journalists aren't generally "renowned" for their business acumen.

Publishers are a different breed altogether :-). Granted, things could be different in other countries, but in the US, publishers generally rise from the sales side; very few reporters ever get to be (or want to be) a publisher.

Andrew Vitvitsky, who calls himself "journalist, author, entrepreneur," just like in the Craigslist ad.

H/t Brandon Hanks.

I dunno, he doesn't sound like the kind of guy to inspire fan mail...

The ad is posted in a couple of other places, where the posting company is listed as TAP, Inc. But I couldn't find any companies in Cambridge with that name. Maybe TAP are the guy's initials?

This city is full of these.

The commentariat here has any number of denizens who will preface some post with a tangential 'legend' summary, as if it lends more weight to the blather. And there are others who worry the credentials of a source more than the merit of an assertion.

There's even one who will find ways to inject their self into as many situations as possible like the legendary J Wesley Smith. http://goo.gl/edpJGh

It's a kind of insecurity. Real confidence comes when these crutches no longer work and you tout your insignificance instead. It's disarming and more fun than these manic defensive tout crouches.

But then, where would Boston be without its blowhards? Probably some low key place in Scandinavia where the social contract is more robust and self touting is considered unseemly.

That means that the pay is very low. But you get to work with this AMAZING person.

Also, lots of the people at Harvard talk worse than that in professional bios. Besides the usual douchebag or mentally imbalanced person, there are also misunderstandings due to coming from other cultures. Or, this post might have been written by a fawning intern, and not even seen by the hiring manager.

Can cultivate an environment of efficiency in the midst of a transformational vs "steady state" working environment.

Means:

We expect you to keep it all together, for yourself and for us, in the midst of a chaotic, unorganized, undisciplined work environment because none of us have ever had to work at a standard job before and have no idea how to create or support a functional, professional workplace.

Also be prepared to be laid off at a day's notice, and paychecks may or may not come regularly.

" No special technical skills needed, but must be technologically proficient; able to organize and ensure effective conference calls, Skype sessions, etc."

Translation: No, we wont pay extra if you can code....

That sounds like an awesome right-out-of-college job.

You'd probably be over your head 50% of the time, but you'd learn a ton and have fun along the way.
