Brawling, boozy BC senior gets Back Bay hotel hauled before licensing board

A combative Boston College senior who smelled of liquor but had the strength that may have come from another substance required several security and police officers to get him into a cruiser at the school's annual commencement ball at the Sheraton Boston on May 15, according to testimony at a Boston Licensing Board hearing this morning.

A Boston College police officer told the board he continues to suffer back pain from the wrestling match with the guy, who in-between battling - and trying to get the officer's gun - hurled repeated racial epithets and hawked numerous loogies at police and kept demanding to know if they knew who his father was. The officer said the kid refused to go through booking - even after his father, who turned out to be a lawyer - showed up at the D-4 police station.

The officer and a hotel security officer said the guy never even made it into the ball. When he showed up at the front door, apparently already high on something, he was refused entry, and security workers put him in a cab. But then he stopped the cab before it left the hotel entrance, got out, went up to a wall, unzipped his pants and began urinating on the wall, police and a hotel security worker said. When another hotel security officer told him to zip up and leave, he refused. When a security guard from the nearby Pru repeated the demand, they said, the kid lunged at him, grabbing him by his tie and shirt.

The BC officer, armed, and there as part of a detail to oversee the large event, arrived. The guy left the security officer alone and began to grapple with the cop and grabbed his holstered gun and seemed to be trying to put it out as they struggled, he said.

Andrew Upton, the hotel's attorney, said the hotel should not be punished because of what he said was an unfortunate aberration - especially since the guy never even got inside. He said the hotel has hosted the BC commencement ball for 25 years and had 46 of its own security officers on duty at the time and that it has always worked closely with the college to ensure it goes off without a hitch. He noted BC also takes it seriously - the dean of students was in attendance, in addition to two BC police officers.

"Counselor, I think you've more than met your burden (of proof)" that the hotel was not to blame for the incident, board Chairwoman Christine Pulgini said.

The board holds a formal vote Thursday on what to do about the citation.

because lawyers wrote the laws to benefit other lawyers. Don't like it? Hire another lawyer to challenge the law or stop voting in legislators that are lawyers!

get a law passed that bars lawyers (no pun intended) from running for poltical office.

In a civil society, lawyers take the place of duels and armed conflict. If people were always reasonable and settled disputes between one another without problems, there would be no need for lawyers.

I wish we knew this turd's name. He certainly wanted people to know his dads.

No links with names, addresses, maybe a photo?

Maybe Adam DOES know who this kids' father is.

They should meet, hear all the details and then issue an official commendation to the Sheraton for being so pro-active in keeping this guy from drinking on their property and then doing the right thing by putting him in a cab. Seems like they did everything by the book and for that they should get a pat on the back, not a trip to the woodshed.

Why is the kid's name omitted? Is there a story about the original incident?

This was the first I'd heard of it. I didn't get the spelling of the kid's name and, I admit it, I made no effort to do so, since this is a licensing-board hearing, not an arraignment or some other court proceeding (granted, people are required to swear an oath to testify, so it's Serious Business, but still), and thought the interesting part was the basic activity, not the specific individual.

You mean there's an a-hole BC kid who's daddy is a lawyer wrecking stuff and more than likely getting away with less than a slap on the wrist?

You don't say...

Someday I want to see a Gangs of New York style brawl between BU, BC, Suffolk, and Emerson kids. Preferably at Post Office square so we can all go to Coogan's after.

A small group of Emerson kids gets framed for moidah at Cleveland Circle and has to walk all the way back to the Theatre District, avoiding the police and crossing the turf of several rival colleges on the way...

Amazing how a 4 year education with the Jesuits prepares you for life. Thank God that he has also graduated from Mary Anns and is now equipped to go city wide to spread the word of the Lord..

Awesome restraint

Boston law enforcement has done fantastic lately.

Given that this guy made a move for the officer's gun (If true) and he showed super human strength, would use of deadly force by the officer have been justifiable in this case? For the record I'm glad it didn't go there.

If it did however, I wonder what stance BC would take? The hotel? How would the kids' family react? Would they say he deserves it since he reached for the gun and was aggressive?
