Those bathing costumes were not sufficiently modest for women prior to that (I have my great-grandmother's suit from that era!).

It looks like the public beach near Commercial St. that was where the pool, Langone Park, Prince St. Park, Puopolo Athletic Field, and sacred double parking zone are now, next to the molasses disaster site.

Not the Emily Rooneys and John Fishes who no doubt have never dipped a toe in the ocean north of Cape Cod.

Have seen this photo in compilations of old South Boston photos. Was an amazing bath house they had back in the day....

Heading out to Castle Island along Day Blvd. pretty much everything after the South Boston yacht club is gone now.

Kelly's Landing would have been the last building along that stretch. But that is gone at least 10 years now.

Anyone know what those aqueduct-looking structures back there were?

If so, it's still there.

Thanks for playing folks! This is indeed Marine Park Beach in South Boston. The photo was published in the 1908 Parks Department report, and was almost certainly taken in the summer of 1907.

Masterwork by Olmstead. Spent days at the old city archives in Readville reading up on Marine Park. The only time in almost 400 years were the cannons at Fort William (Independence) fired in anger. By the British at Patriots near 'Q' St (Farragut) but they were just out of range. One cannon exploded and it was an own-goal! Why Mairine Park is not on the National Register is a damn shame.

Masterwork by Olmsted? Did he put the ocean there?
