Welcoming the new cutter in town

US Coast Guard Cutter James in Boston Harbor

John Gage watched the National Security Cutter James ease into a berth at the North End Coast Guard base today, in advance of its officials Aug. 8 commissioning.

It's named for Joshua James of Hull, who was a sea captain (he specialized in piloting ships full of paving stones from Hull to Boston) who also worked on lifesaving along the Hull coast (after watching his mother and sister drown in a capsized boat half a mile from harbor).

The James is open for public inspection on Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (free, but ID is required, and no backpacks or large bags). After its commissioning, it will sail to its permanent port in North Charleston, SC.

Wow, the NSCs were just a pipedream when I seperated in 2007. Amazing that we're getting one now here no less since they're huge for USCG standards, longer than the previous "big" WHECs which are 378' and maybe longer than the two polar ice breakers IIRC.

She's only here temporarily:

I saw her yesterday anchored in the harbor, when I was coming back from a whale watch, and sort of wondered what she was doing out there. Not much if she isn't commissioned yet, apparently.

(Go whale watching soon, if that's your thing. The humpbacks are out in force.)

I particularly like the line of the hull. Somehow I get the feeling that I wouldn't want to be a bad guy out on the open seas with this bad boy lurking nearby.

It's just the class, like High Endurance cutter. These cutters were devleoped as part of the deepwater program (which I never thought would succeed). She's still the USCGC James.

They used to be part of the Department of Transportation, but as of 2002 they are part of Homeland Security.

Which makes a lot of sense, if you think about it.

In wartime, the Coast Guard has traditionally been commanded by the US Navy.

At 418 feet, she's just a few feet bigger than Paul Allen's Octopus (413') ;-)

The only reason I bring this up is I just saw Octopus in Reykjavic harbor - and it's a big boat.
