When will this city seriously contemplate canceling the Carribean Festival?

The firearm violence associated with this weekend is staggering.

None of it happened during the festival or either of the parades (one of which hasn't even started yet as I write this)

Don't be naive. It has EVERYTHING to do with the festival. The gangs stay up all night Friday into Saturday, shooting at each other.

It's the reason BPD is all hands on deck all weekend. Maybe you should thank one of them when you see them today for having to endure this violent weekend every year.

The sad fact is shootings happen all year round.

Since we're all quoting the Globe, here's another quote from their story:

Officials are not yet sure whether the shootings were connected, or if they were gang-related. No arrests have been made.

NOTE: I've changed the original post (again): Three people were definitely shot on Creston, but whether the two people also found shot like seven blocks away happened there as well is another question.

I have BPD in my family.. I was told it was actually 7 people shot last night. Five at this scene, then two others from separate incidents.

Awful. All bullshit aside, the sad fact remains that this particular weekend, for whatever reason, is a violent one. It always has been, and it appears it always will be unless we do something.

EVERY year their is a shooting relating to the festival. No other cultural event in the city has the same issue however you love bashing the St. Patrick's parade. Why so quick to defend the caribbian festival?

The St. Patrick's stuff I'm always on about is stuff that happens in or next to or just after the parade, in contrast to this particular mass shooting, which happened several hours before even the earlier parade started, never mind the festival itself, and nowhere near the parade routes or the festival site. If you were to bring up the shootings last year (Dawnn Jaffier and the other woman who got shot, but not fatally), that would be different. But you didn't.

But let's assume, for a moment, that a shooting spree that happened several hours before even the earlier of the two parades did in fact involve people here specifically for the parade, as opposed to the sort of people who would likely be shooting people anyway. What you're saying is that because of the actions of a handful of people, an event that is peacefully attended by tens of thousands of people should be ended forever. Is that correct?

canceling the festival would put the tiniest dent in gun violence in boston?

Yes.

Come on now Adam - this event has been notorious. I worked with a woman who lived on parade route who hated the event as did her neighbors. The neighborhood group demanded the promoters pare down the marketing because it was being advertised in the Tri-state (NY, MA, RI) area but promoters didnt provide enough parking , waste management or security- so guess what - people parked all over their streets blocked driveways and threw trash in their yards. And there is always gun violence and you can bet every gang unit in the metro boston area has a presence there.
Naïveté nor pretending it ain't so doesn't mean it ain't so.

That sounds dumb...The same gangs stay up all night any day. Carnival has nothing to do with it. Open your damn mind.

UMMMM these shootings are not related to the Caribbean festival. To blame all this on the festival is to be completely ignorant of what really goes down in the streets of Boston while attacking the beautiful culture of the Black/West Indian people. Our carnival is the one thing that is sure to unite all of us as a people, with good music, tasty foods and one hell of a good time. We don't get down with senseless violence or condone the shit. The losers who are out here shooting up the streets are the same low-life scum lords you'd hear about at any other given time or day. You people make it seem like nothing bad happens until the day of the festival, Umm No Sorry, you need to do your research. Everyday there is a shooting going on, y'all just don't hear about it. Shootings even happen on Independence Day, during New Years Eve Festivities... but of course you guys don't associate the violence that happens on that day with the those particular events. How about you just say what it's really about, skin color.

http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2015/08/29/one-man-killed-and-four-woun...

The shootings all occurred in the hours before the annual J’ouvert celebration, an early morning parade that kicks off the weekend’s Caribbean festival. J’ouvert was shortened this year because of safety concerns: The all-night party that precedes the parade often sees violence in the city.

“That’s why we had concerns leading up to this,” said Evans on Talbot Street as the J’ouvert celebration was getting started. “In the last years, it’s been a violent night.”

Last year, 26-year-old Dawnn Jaffier was killed when she was caught in the crossfire of a gang fight on Blue Hill Avenue.

I agree with Ron,
It's the person firing the firearm and committing murder is the problem, not the festival. People take advantage if of people, places and things.

Your ignorance is a bliss to blame the festival . I will be glad when you when you say something meaningful.

It doesn't matter the date, time of day, or event this gun violence it's going to happen, people think canceling this event where people actually come out for a good time and not to cause drama is going to change something and facts are they aren't!!! wasn't it like 2 weekends ago 5 people were shot 2 dead one night?????? Don't be one of these sheep thinking carnival is the cause of the violence!!!

It never has anything to do with The Caribbean Festival, but they will use it as an excuse to either move it, or take it away completely.
This is a neighborhood thing where this group doesn't like that group, they killed my homeboy so I'm going to kill one of there's or shoot up their neighborhood not caring who gets caught in the cross fire, a child, a woman they just don't care. We can blame BPD, but we have to blame our selves start searching your kids back packs before they enter your homes, if you know your teen is not working or going to school, start questioning them, it begins in the HOMES, it begins in the neighborhoods. Living in Mission Hill if I can see who selling drugs I'm pretty sure the parents, the cameras, and the BPD can see, people want to turn a blind eye to the facts. Black people keep kill each other off, your making their job easier. Why should they listen to black lives matter, when it doesn't even matter amongst ourselves.

There are so many people partying this weekend. If there is someone you are looking for, this would be the weekend they would be out. Most likely enjoying themselves, with their guard down. The entire BPD is ordered to work this festival.

a couple weeks after Boston's. This year's will be on Sunday, September 13. It's a bit smaller than Boston's and it doesn't have Jouvert, but otherwise it's the same event with the same participants, vendors, and spectators. It outgrew Central Square a few years ago and now takes place in more spacious Kendall Square.

To my knowledge, nobody has ever blamed Cambridge's carnival for any incidental nearby crimes, or called for the event to be cancelled.

The event brings in people from all different places including rival gangs - into a neighborhood already overridden with gangs and guns..

The gangs use the festival has a war zones to get back at their enemy, gangs members already know that their rival gang member are going to attend the festivities, it doesn't take a genius to know that your rival gang members are going to attend the carnival, that's when they map out a plan to get revenge.
