It's nice to see that they are proposing a path along the American Legion Highway that would connect some lesser-known green spaces in that area to the Emerald Necklace. There is already a group working on bringing some attention to those green spaces, and the city council will be holding a hearing to take a closer look.

I hope that Livable Streets is able to get some more people who live in the area involved, though, because based on that map they don't even really know where Roslindale and (especially) West Roxbury are.

It looks more like completing the circuit of Jewish War Veterans in Franklin Park with a path through Forest Hills and St. Michael's Cemeteries, then Canterbury Street to Cummins Highway, giving the cyclists the joy of climbing that hill.

I read in the papers a few weeks ago that Murphy and Wu want to spruce up American Legion Highway. I run between Blue Hill Ave and Cummins Highway several times a year (it's part of a longer run, so I don't do it as much as I want to.) I've never thought it is in that bad of a shape, but the stretch between Walk Hill Ave and Morton Street has basically nothing, meaning of course a lot of nature.

You're correct that the proposed path doesn't follow American Legion Highway itself - I just meant that it just goes through that corridor. There are some residents in that area who are independently proposing a path that takes a slightly different route; I can't say which is more feasible. That same group is working with Councilors Murphy and Wu to protect some of the green spaces in the area. Ideally, I think they'd like to see pathways that connect Stony Brook Reservation to Franklin Park. That connection isn't part of the Emerald Network is proposing, but it would be a nice addition if it could be done.

Years ago I saw a report on a proposal (in the 30s, I think) that saw the creation of American Legion Highway. The plan was to get a road up to where the CVS is on Washington Street, making a network. My guess is that they saw the hill they needed to climb and decided against it. And now AdamG has a house neither on nor a block away from a major "parkway." That's also why American Legion ends so oddly at Hyde Park Ave.

On the other hand, if they spruced up the Sherrin Street Woods and perhaps cut a deal with the George Wright Golf Course, there's practically a path right there (with a little street running.)

I live in Dorchester and would bike, for general transportation, commuting, and for pleasure, much more often if there were a halfway reasonable way to actually get anywhere on a bike from my apartment.

But creating some kind of path/extension from Franklin Park to Ashmont would be great--that stretch isn't the worst to ride on but it's not the best either. And get some lanes/signage on Dot Ave too. If people could safely/nigh continuously bike from Ashmont to the harbor path and then in town it'd be pretty great.
