Yeah it's in disrepair from being empty so long, but still was a beautiful building inside. It's a shame it'll be torn down for more condos and not be used as a restaurant.

Hate to Disagree
Bloated, overbuilt, stupid access, poor streetscape, the perfect coda to the 1980's real estate market in this area.
It looked great up close, but from a business standpoint it was like putting a Krusty Burger on an floating oil derrick.

Pretty much everything on Route 1 is like pulling into a NASCAR pitstop.
Leaving is worse. You wait and wait and wait for an opening in traffic, then pull out and floor it. Yet someone is still on your ass honking and flashing their lights for slowing them down.

If that building was ever open! At the time, I was a frequent Rt. 1 visitor, but, somehow, it seemed to me, the building was built, and nothing ever happened. I guess I'm close enough to correct there. How many years was it in business?

I don't think it was in business for very long. There was a Weylu's in Woburn that was open before the one on Rt. 1.
Really, for the opulance it really didn't last that long. Obviously not a good ROI.

I moved here
in 1998 and I remember it being open.. I ate there once. Just once before it shuttered.

i remember being there and accidentally breaking a tea cup and feeling bummed that they were going to make my dad pay for it
he promptly gave me a lesson in economics and laughed it off
Weylus in Boston
There was also a Weylus in Boston for a short time, somewhere near where the Channel used to be. I also recall a story, maybe in the Globe, about how and why the whole Weylus empire came crashing down. I do know that the one in Saugus used way, way to much MSG in their food.

Weylu's in Newton
Some of you may remember as they expanded (with solid rumors but still rumors of Hong Kong mob money backing for laundering) they opened up in a church in Newton for maybe 2 years before closing. I think, despite the large Jewish populace in Newton, most people couldn't enjoy eating in a church - plus all the white people who worked there took away any sort of authenticity.
A few of us went up to the Route 1 location when it was still open and new, and the line was insanely long so we didnt go in, but we tried again a few weeks later but with only 2 parties ahead of us, nearly an hour passed of the '5-10 minutes' speech, so we walked out.
When it was the large dim sum buffet - East Manor - place in the mid 2000s, the family and I went and it wasn't bad - you could tell it was good because alot of Asians ate there. However, the food declined and it closed.
I always thought if I seized the region to be a warlord, I would have made that palace my HQ.
I remember the Boston location -

My father used to take us there for take out quite often.
One of the Weylu's family members was always very kind. I think he was a manager. Lots of fold memories about that place.
In anyone knows the backstory or can point me in the right direction, would like to know how everything came crashing down.
If I remember correctly before the opened up the palace in Saugus they seemed to be on top of the world. Very successful.

I remember having several good meals at the Weylu's in the Museum Place Mall in Salem before he built that great ark on Route 1. It's a shame that he overdid it.

Ah HA!! I thought I recognized the name. After reading the Globe article posted above, I now know I am not crazy. There was a location in Brockton, although the specifics are eluding me right now.
