Preying mantis in Somerville

LadyLazerJ couldn't help but notice this praying mantis on her Somerville porch railing yesterday.

Among her tags for the photo:

  • backyard critter
  • he can have the porch
  • pet
  • he crawled on my arm

While playing softball last year at M Street in Southie, we spotted one on the field. Took it out of the playing area and set it up on the grass behind the bench. It stayed there, watching people, letting kids pick it up, etc., and it was all quite charming (when graded on a bug scale of charm.) They swivel their heads like mammals - very odd for an insect - so they give off much less of a bug vibe than most creepy crawlies.

They swivel their head like a predator. They have binocular vision and move their head to get a better range fix on objects around them.
