Thankfully the police blocked off the abutting Melnea Cass sidewalk so walkers from Orchard Gardens School didn't have to see this.

That any human being has to bed down for the night under a tractor trailer truck.

the city has plenty of shelters but many prefer to stick it out on their own

city does not have "plenty" of shelters. And, yes, many homeless folks do prefer not to go there. However, that was not my point. No one should be homeless and no one should have to sleep under a truck.

operated ones, are pretty unpleasant and even dangerous. The worse ones are what's called a 'wet' shelter, that is they allow intoxicated (alcohol, drugs) person in. All people are accepted, because cities can't discriminate. They also don't really seperate people, just dump everyone together. So you have hardcore alcoholics, druggies, usually using, released convicts who've done all kinds of things, people just down on their luck, mentally ill, some seriously disturbed, etc. There are some private shelyers that are much better, safer, do have rules about who can and can't stay (no alcohol or drugs, can't be intoxicated,etc.).

As for mentally ill, of which many homeless are, most shelters, especially the publicly operated ones, are scary places, so they'll stay outdoors.

Terrible accident. Not much more to say.

Some of us see a story like this and are led to ponder what would bring a man to sleep under a truck. Others see this as a jolly good chance to expound on their theories about one-world government being behind efforts to reduce traffic deaths. Just, no.

(Since this must be at least his third or fourth offense, perhaps banning is finally in order?)

He's running the chopper traffic in this city. Have you ever heard him deny it?
