And here I thought nothing could out-stupid the kimono protest.

More like ladies of a certain age from Brookline who always need something to complain about, and their husbands are just happy if it get's them out of the house.

The protest was organized by Max Geller (man) and the only other protesters they mentioned in the Globe article are men, there are some women in the pictures.

Is this a hipster thing?

up

Not hipsters - persons of hipness.

Some people just love to blame anything they can on 'hipsters'. Reminds me of the old-timers who used to grumble about 'hippies' back when I was a kid - or the even older ones who would mutter about 'beatniks' or 'greasers'.

The baby boomers expect you millennials to pay for their good times. There's not a problem you people whine about that can't be blamed on the then hippies.

I just talked about hearing people complain about hippies when I was a kid - that should clue you into what generational cadre I belong to (hint - think Ramones, not the Beatles or Taylor Swift).

Hippies and beatniks had a sense of the new..."something is happening here but you don't know what it is/do you Mr. Jones?". But as much as it can be defined, so many hipsters seem to live by irony. Or by a sense of nostalgia for something they never experienced in the first place.

I'm not the millenials' biggest fan, but I don't see that much difference between their love of nostalgia and that of many previous generations. I hear lots of people (mostly their parent generation, the boomers) slamming them for being too focussed on the latest new thing (those mayflies!) and at the same time for being too into the past (apparently forgetting 'back to the farm' and all that goofy edwardian fashion young folk were sporting in the late 60s/early 70s).

Irony? That's just the dark post-80s skeptism of the adults they grew up around, softened by youth.

If anything, millenials seem a lot like boomers with cell phones and better drugs.

Had a chance to visit the Van Gogh Museum a couple of years ago:

Nice story about how it was a gift for his nephew and the blossoms symbolize new life. His sister in law wrote to him about how the baby would look up and admire "Uncle Vincent's" art.

Commenter dthea1 at the Globe site asked if it was a 'coincidence' that "Renoir is renowned for painting wealthy high-society Jewish patrons from 1878 to 1881 and that Mr. Geller is President of the Students for Justice in Palestine?"

A quick google shows that Max Geller is indeed the president of a group at Northeastern that was suspended last year, allegedly after years of "anti-Semitic vandalism, glorification of terrorist groups, calls for the destruction of Israel, and other actions by NU SJP’s leadership..."

(People may remember the story re: this group slipping fake eviction notices under the doors of jewish students as the straw that finally broke the camels back.)

Sounds like there's more to this guys shenanigans than just over-zealous art-appreciation.

Jewish patrons were pretty well enmeshed in the Paris art scene of the time and Renoir, though he seemed to steer a kind of middle ground during the Dreyfus affair, was not exactly a big advocate for the Jews. http://www.artinsociety.com/julie-manet-renoir-and-the-dreyfus-affair.html I think you might want to find another tree up which to bark.

Whether you think the connection is academically legit or not, I think this image from the guy's instagram page of him flipping off Renoir pics at the museum while prominently displaying a "Boycott Israel" shirt, lends credence to the theory that his protest has roots in his political ideology.

If you read up at all, you'll note that Renoir dabbled pretty freely in anti-Semitism--Jewish patrons or no. If this guy were trying to express his anti-Israel feelings through a public attack on an artist, I honk it's safe to say there are plenty of other more sensible choices. But believe what you will.

Jeff is not claiming that these are logical reasons, just the motivations of an unbalanced person. I think there's a lot more than historical inaccuracy going on in Max's head.

I'm going to guess that he's Jewish, even if he's also anti-Likudist.

That said, I don't see why this troll merits attention from the Globe or anyone else.

or is the Westboro Baptist Church going to show up with some bullshit made-up reason too?

I have to wonder if this is a bit tongue in cheek, but I wish I had as much free time as these clowns seem to have.

Alex, what is "shit white people do?"

up

I would bet you that Mr. Geller does not identify himself as 'white'.

I take it they won't be wearing any pastels on the picket line then?

a joke. Because if they're serious, screw them. Everyone knows that if there's any so-called artist that needs to be banned, it's Rothko.
