Dirt-bike crackdown continues: Out-of-towners arrested, bikes seized in Mattapan

Boston Police report arresting five Cape men Sunday on a variety of charges, including operating motor vehicles without a license, after they allegedly ripped up the streets of Mattapan on dirt bikes - and as they were loading the bikes into a rental truck.

As officers were busy corralling those riders and their bikes, they noticed two more guys loading their bikes into a pickup nearby and wound up arresting them as well, police say. The pair of teens, one from Canton, one from Abington, were arrested as well, on various motor-vehicle charges.

Police say officers from the BPD auto-theft task force and District B-3 teamed up with state Environmental Police to look for stunting off-road drivers on Mattapan streets Sunday evening as part of an overall crackdown on illegal dirt bikes and ATVs.

Officers were conducting surveillance of a large group of off road vehicles which were operating in violation of the auto laws and refusing to stop for police. Officers followed five of the riders to the rear parking lot of a building at 1020 Harvard Street where they observed the suspects loading the bikes into the back of a U-Haul truck. Officers placed all five suspects in custody without incident and seized the dirt bikes as well as the U-Haul truck and a pickup truck belonging to one of the suspects.

The five Cape men, ranging in age from 18 to 28, listed addresses in Wareham, East Falmouth, Mashpee, and the Cataumet section of Bourne.

Why not do that shit back home, where there's certainly more acreage? Why drive up to Boston just to ride through the streets?

Maybe they thought it'd be cool to tear through an urban area for a change? Or that they'd have less chance of being recognized and more chance of avoiding arrest in the crowded streets of 'the big city'?

(I'm going to risk a slightly non-PC observation and point out that given the names listed in the police report (Frye, Mendes, McElroy, Aylmer, and Hicks), I suspect they blended in less than they might have planned in that neighborhood.)

Good on the BPD for catching these jackasses.

Maybe these out-of-towners came to Mattapan to purchase "bargain priced" bikes, and the racing around in the street was in the nature of test drives. There's nothing in the story that says they brought the bikes with them.

This is about street cred and the thrill of feeling like billy badass riding through the city.

They think they look cool but they actually look hideous. I'm afraid one of these days we're going to read about a serious accident.

Already some serious accidents in other US cities if we haven't had one yet:

the Cape have a hard-drug problem?

Maybe the vroom-vrooming is a side hobby to the drug-dealing.

It is a quality of life issue. The older men arrested have had reckless driving and drug charges. The younger ones have clean records.

Suburban kids (read: males) used to come to Boston to tag, and probably still do. They'd be too scared to try it back home, but they think doing it in Boston means they have functioning gonads or something.

If it is really like the graffiti, they aren't scared at all to try it at home. For graffitti, the consequences at home are minimal by comparison.

There were several articles in the local media about five or six years ago (and discussed on UHub) where suburban brats came into the city, started tagging, and received actual punishment. They and their handlers were complaining that it wasn't faiiirr because, when they did it at home, they got a "That isn't nice! Don't do that" and a slap on the wrist.

They were screaming because they came to the city to tag, and found that judges in communities formerly plagued by graffiti didn't care that "it was only tagging" or that daddy and mommy were wealthy whatevers.

I understand your point, but your analogy actually fails the history test.

There are actual dirt tracks set up just for this, plus tons of snow machine trails. My niece and her husband spend entire weeks and many weekends running trails with ATVs and snow machines. My husband used to meet his brother up there and play off road on his DRZ.

This doesn't make any sense.

Thankfully the Mayor and the BPD found a legit and safe way to deal with this issue, and didn't let Boston turn into Philadelphia. Anybody who doesn't see a problem with these guys, google some videos and news of Philly dirt bike riders, and the havoc that has ensued for years now. Would you want that in your neighborhood?

I live in Mattapan and the bikes arent the problem, focus in the shootings, muggings, property crime, motorcycles, scooters are here to stay.

And focus in on the root of those issues then get the weed killer out.

Dirtbikes and ATV are not here to stay how can you just accept that huge quality of life issue as being ok? They not acceptable or even legal to ride on city streets, and the dangerous stunting and erratic driving is a public safety hazard. The police and city can deal with more than one issue at a time.

The Millenium version of a The Defiant Ones? Except for the weaving in and out of traffic and the noise it seems Like they are having fun.
Maybe there is a way to make a legit competition with insurance and permits and such say over by design center roads on the weekend - and voila you have a new sport with sponsors and prize money and franchise opportunity - snowboarders did it and the "extreme" sports events are huge draws. I live on a street where they go up and down and it is a pain - but it seems like a healthy fun outlet for these guys. There may be some underbelly that i am unaware of but just thinking outside the box.

it seems like a healthy fun outlet for these guys

Do you think that's really what they want? Maybe. But one competition a year isn't going to satisfy anyone's urge to ride the rest of the time. Even once a week, which is not going to happen -- they're not going to stop wanting to ride the rest of the week.

70 dirt bikes, atv's and scooters driving 60mph up Cummins Hwy ON BOTH SIDES OF THE STREET is not having fun it's dangerous. And placing "Legal" tracks in the area will only make the issue worse.

There are PLENTY of places to let it rip where these guys live. There are areas for just this, and everyone rides in places like power line rows and the north end of the base. As I said these guys were just visiting their cousins and raising a little hell in town.
