BRA really, really determined to put a restaurant at the end of Long Wharf

NorthEndWaterfront.com reports the BRA is appealing a federal judge's ruling that turning the shelter at the end of the wharf into a restaurant would violate its own pledges not to do so.

The BRA and a group of North End residents have been battling over the issue for years; the restaurant operator the BRA chose eventually gave up and opened a restaurant in South Boston instead.

I wonder what's behind this specifically. Does the Marriott want that space commercialized for some reason or does one of those bars next to the ferries want to move out there? It seems surprising that this would be worth the pushback by the BRA.

Why is this going through the federal and not the state court?

Because it has to do with a land boundary with the national park service...

And also state regulators. With no permanent resolution, so it jumped to the feds.

Has it generally gone against the BRA, or is it more or less an even split?

One side would win, then the other would appeal. What finally got it into federal court was when the National Park Service stepped in in 2014, said a retired worker found a map on which the BRA indicated its agreement to keep the tip of the wharf as parkland under the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund act, which paid for part of the wharf's renovations back in the day when the BRA kept all its records on paper written with disappearing ink. The BRA, which now assures us its record keeping is up to snuff, then sued the National Park Service.

The people want to keep using the wharf as it is. Some business wants to grab the space. What's BRA's incentive?

What's BRA's incentive?

The BRA is paid for by, and represents the interests of the developers, not the public.

That's not some snarky cynical comment about campaign contributions, it is literally the way the BRA's funding and charter are set up.

It seems to me that all they do is make fake "blighted" designations in order to pass sweet deals to cronies. They hardly do any work in actual blighted areas, of which there are plenty... probably because their crony friends don't want any of that actually blighted land in blighted neighborhoods. It's an abuse of power that just seems to have carte blanche to do whatever it wants wherever it wants to. When it can't, like Long Wharf, it pitches a hissy fit and goes to the ends of the earth before admitting defeat. If the BRA were a person it would be a sociopath. Burn the BRA!!!!

End rant.

Just when I was getting excited to never again hear people call themselves "The North End 5" like they were locked up in the Montgomery jail. You're blocking a restaurant. You aren't MLK.

Well, actually, that location is all wet.

King tide? Wet.
Storm tide? Wet.

We have had several storms in the last five years where waves were breaking over the end of Long Wharf. Getting to be the go-to place for dramatic "tide way too high" photos and news stories.

If they really do ram this through on the umpteenth try, they better make sure that anything going in there can be put through a rinse cycle every year or so.

This is only getting worse.

I know - instead of a restaurant, why not a retirement home for Shelby Scott?
