Huzzah: We'll have midnight fireworks for the New Year after all

The City of Boston Credit Union will underwrite fireworks over the harbor as 2016 begins, the mayor's office announced today.

The credit union will kick in $30,000 towards the pyrotechnics, good news since the company now running First Night said last week it didn't have any money for them.

They step up a lot. I'm happy to have some of my money with them.

(pssst - they underwrote the shredding portion of the Saturday haz waste v. soccer families traffic hassle so many of you hated 2 weekends ago)

Why does the city need a private business to underwrite a public service like hazard waste drop-off?

they just sponsor having the shredding trucks there... not the whole thing...

I guess that makes more sense as shredding a convenience for household garbage disposal but certainly not a necessity.

Banks are now so rich they can literally burn money...

And it's going to look spectacular!

Too bad that a bank wouldn't sponsor this, and the city had to rely on a smaller, non-profit Credit Union to come up with the funds.

Hi, I'm from the mayor's office, and I hear you want to donate to the First Night fund.

No? That's a shame. That deviance you filed with the city shouldn't be affected though.

The office in charge of them must have some interesting hearings.

Spoken perhaps as the late Mayor Menino would have said it. That zoning deviance won't EVER be approved.

Why would a small credit union want to pay for fireworks and watch their money go up in smoke? Because their board is made up of city employees, whose career depends on indulging the mayor's wishes.

A more likely scenario is now the fireworks will be called "The 2016 Boston Credit Union New Years Fireworks Show brought to you by Boston Credit Union"

World Class status reinstated.

I'm curious how this is in the best interest of the credit union members. Especially if the banks don't think it's worth the advertising.

Remember a few years back when they touted Shawn Thornton as a member. They want to be bigger than they are, and PR like this cannot hurt. I mean, what is the value of having your name attached to this? To say the least, they were mentioned on this website without a robbery being attached.

I've been a member for 20 years. It was one location when I started. Now there are 3 branches, and you don't have to work for the city (only live in Suffolk and I believe Norfolk Counties) to join. I would imagine they pay rent on their City Hall location, and if Walsh messed with that there could be a revolt within the building, so my guess is that this is on the up and up.

from their website:

Since being established in 1915, City of Boston Credit Union has followed the universal credit union philosophy of “People Helping People.” We believe in the importance of giving back to the communities we serve and participate in dozens of initiatives each year from youth and sports groups to charitable and educational organizations.

I've been a member for about 7 or 8 years, living in Suffolk County.

And how does donating 30k fit any of these
Criteria?

The people of Boston would miss their fireworks at midnight, and now we have them.

They probably give something to road races and the like, too. If this plays out well, it is money well spent.

Apparently there was a hue and cry for New Year's Eve fireworks.

Maybe as a member you have the right to ask about all their charitable giving and sponsorships? I have a feeling you might not be happy about some of it.

If it's like any other bank, credit union, or business, they've got a charitable giving line item and some monies available to use toward this event.

This is nice, but bringing back the Grand Procession and the indoor arts performances would have more lasting value.

I'm a member and this really bothers me. It's such a waste of my money. I'm not happy about it.

They advertise, right? So, you don't like this form of advertising?
The next time you get to elect board members, remember this and vote for someone else. (I'm assuming that as a member, you vote for officers somehow).

Perhaps you can put together a "no underwriting public events" slate and get on the board.

After the shameless, corrupt deal between Menino's BRA and the Red Sox for the Yawkey Way and Lansdowne Street rights, the least John Henry could have done is paid for the midnight fireworks. $30,000 is probably the team payroll for the first out on Opening Day. Sad to see a small credit union bearing this burden under heavy pressure from City Hall.
