this guy is a great football/boxing writer. the plagiarism thing was blown out of proportion. at least he's not that idiot, tomase.

This is the guy who thinks that Lance Armstrong isn't a "real athlete" because cyclists only pump their legs up and down repeatedly.

Is that a buff-colored bouffant toupe he's wearing ... interesting split in the middle there ...

bad hair. terrible clothes.great writer. swirly, do you think that lance armstrong never used any performance enhancers? seriously? im not saying cyclist aren’t athletes but armstrong seems like a guy that got away with it before the scrutiny became too much.

Cyclists, especially ones that win a lot, are constantly being tested. They could be at home, playing with their kids, and then get a knock on the door, with someone demanding that they pee in a cup. It's a way of life for them.

If the NFL/MLB/NBA players were tested this way, you'd see a much higher failure rate than you see now.

its a lot tougher now than it was in the final year of armstrongs career. he got out right as the testing got way tougher. who won it this year? i dont know either. i do know that they would bust the guy with the yellow shirt almost every other day. the testing wasnt this tough when armstrong was racing.thats why he aint coming back.

Was it Dara Torres? Who knows. He plans a comeback this year or next, I believe.

He's won 7! Imagine that 7 TdF victories. No cyclist has ever done what Lance has done.

It's too bad Ron Borges hasn't taken the opportunity to watch the TdF and learn about strategy, tactics and the necessity of being able to endure pain and not let up.

It's also a team sport. No one wins this race without a strong and committed team. Like other team sports, there are positions such as GC contender (thats Lance) sprinters, climbers.

Ron is no better and no worse than a bunch of other sports writers, plagiarism notwithstanding. When the Partiots were winning, Borges was the lone negative voice in the sports reporter world... The Dan Shaughnessey of the NE Patriots. He was wrong and he was annoying but he stood alone. Smerlas gave Borges endless sh*t and I laughed.

Since when do reporters' opinions about games not yet layed become the most important thing about them? Since they go on TV and yammer on about what they think about the NEXT contest. To me, how they write about what they've witnessed is what counts. Prognostication, while fun. is silly.

bonds hit 762 homeruns
clemens struck out 4167

i know your going to say there was no testing and i agree.my point is that the testing in the last 2-3 years is going to catch a lot more than the tests done previously.

That's bullshit. During the TdF, the yellow/green/etc. jersey and the podium finishers are tested every day, along with other random picks. Again, Lance was probably tested more than anybody else.

Lance Armstrong compensates for having one fewer testicle by having a larger than normal heart and lungs. Gives him a bit of an advantage in endurance activities (namely the Tour De France).

Michael Phelps has ankles that bend 15% more than the average person, has big feet (size 14s) and his legs are smaller compared to his torso than the average person, making it easier for him to float because his legs aren't weighing him down.

Not all advantages come from injecting chemicals.

I don't know if Lance doped or not - I do know that had he used anabolic steroids, he'd likely be one big neoplastic testicle by now, given his medical history. What some people forget was that Lance also lost a huge amount of muscle mass that he wasn't using for cycling, and never built it back - something like 25 pounds. That alone is hugely enhancing. Whatever Lance or any cyclist was or was not doing doesn't mean that cyclists who race are not athletes.

That said, Borges actually wrote a column (for SI?) where he declared that the cyclists in the Tour-de-France were non-athletes in a non-sport and then showcased his utterly stellar ignorance on several fronts. His comments had nothing to do with doping scandals, either - it was all about "his" perception of manly sportishness! Then he tried to claim he wasn't serious, but nobody believed him because the piece seemed to be the work of a bitter ex-jock more than an ironic joke.

Made it all the more amusing when the guy who doesn't know a sport when he sees it was caught not knowing what "original writing" was either.

you make some good points. he is however a great boxing and football writer. the herald adds instant credibility by adding him to their roster.tomase is done in this town. go to the heralds website and look at the comments on anything tomase writes. he is a joke. all borges is guilty of is being boorish and not crediting sources in a "notes" column.

Borges perception of manly sportishness is tied up in his self-image. That's why its fun to see him get in verbal spats with Smerlas who did play in the NFL and was all-pro.

Borges asserts his dubiously superior insight over Smerlas the same way he asserts his superior manly sportishness. Smerlas was right, Smerlas was more sportishly manly and Borges is a better writer. Fred 2, Borges 1. We'll give Borges a point even though Fred doesn't write sports columns.

It's the cult of personality and the nature of sports entertainment on local news. Boorish macho white men engaged in "I'm right you're wrong" locker room chatter.

Borges has a personal hatred of Belichick. I don't know all the details, but that fact alone makes all his writing about the NFL suspect. So what's left - professional boxing? Yeah, that's some riveting entertainment.

Did you know you were plagiarizing Charlie Pierce with your headline?

:-)

(Re: Doug Flutie, circa 1987, as I remember. Yes, I know it's been used about Belichik and others.)

I remember the hubbub surrounding that phrase being used RE: Flutie, but I cannot recall Pierce's reason for using it. Perhaps it was because Futie crossed the NFLPA picket lines? (I know, google is my friend, but i was hoping that you could fill me in.)

Kevin Mannix famously recycled the phrase to describe BB when he was hired as the Patriots' head coach. (Jan 5, 2000, in the Sunday Herald.)

EDIT: Google doesn't seem to remember Pierce's article.

Nothing.

I believe it was when Flutie crossed the pickets, but I'm not positive about that.

Anyone else recall?

Belichik doesn't suffer fools. I suspect Belichik reacted to one of Borges' questions in a way that crossed Borges' ample ego and sent his testosterone through the roof. Manly sportiness and all that.
