Sheesh, you'd think Harvard men would be smart enough to avoid parties with women in shark costumes

Harvard shark?

The Globe reports one of the U's exclusive men's clubs held a party after deciding to admit women that featured much debauchery, including, yes, women in shark costumes (like this?), and that's just not the sort of thing a proper Harvard gentleman should be caught near, and now the club is being forced to sit in a corner and take a serious time out.

These Harvard children are merely trying to distinguish themselves from the many children acting up recently at Yale, Dartmouth, Brandeis, Amherst...

Hedonistic parties, protests over institutional racism, mutatis mutandis, right?

as "douchebaggery" and went right to assuming it had something to do with the B school. I guess I ought not extrapolate.

Is most certainly not limited to the B school. It's pretty much A to Z.

means admitting women in full dress.

They have always omitted fully dressed women from their club.

You just don't join their club if you don't like how they operate.

they could not require women to be in the nude and/or in shark suits.

Women (and men) could start their own club if they don't like the rules of an existing one. I'm not joining a gardening club and then telling everyone they have to stop planting flowers because I'm allergic to pollen.

This only got thrown in the article because it's kind of funny, right? Or are we offended by shark suits now? I'm not sure what's real life and fake life anymore when it comes to this kind of stuff.

...on shark skin suits.

... turned up no particularly debauched looking shark costumes.

"Be sexy." That is to say, add "sexy" to your search for any costume, and behold the endless stream of scantily clad women - e.g., "sexy shark costume."

... don't strike me as problematic for a costume party. Now, if only the women had to wear costumes, that might be objectionable in itself.

Were people brought here against their will? If not then what's the issue?

I, like you, am mystified by the shark costume reference.

As I mentioned elsewhere, the real issue leading to the suspension is almost surely the internal battle between the actual ruling authority of the club (the club's alumni governing board) and the club's current undergraduate officers over this issue of whether women should be admit6ted as members.

... and the alumni governing board of the club has ruled out any initiation of women club members until such time as they expressly authorize the rule change that would allow women to become members.

...like the alumni board (which actually governs the club) used the party as an excuse to clamp down on the overweening undergraduate club officers -- who decided to accept women as members without (still yet) getting authorization from their elders (who were not necessarily in favor of admitting women as members):

They could just be underweening.

and it sounds like that's just what happened. Admitting women to a long-standing male-only finals club was a huge victory for women and dismantling of a discriminatory tradition. Now Harvard is getting all prissy about it?

...the club's alumni board members (not affiliated with Harvard's administration in any way) who actually have governing authority over the club and its property (as opposed to the undergraduate officers).

No *official* connection. But final club alumni are influential in the Harvard Alumni Association, which is influential over the university.
