Sketching out the T

Jackson Square T stop

Over the past two years, Laura Meilman visited every single subway stop on the MBTA and drew a sketch at each one:

I have a love of travel and of exploring new places and Project T-scapes allowed me to do exactly that in my own surroundings. Finding the beauty in every day life is an important aspect of my work and I hope that idea is visible in the T-scapes as well.

She even has a calendar for sale.

Hey everyone! This is the artist weighing in-- I was not expecting all this publicity (what a pleasant surprise!) and given the greater interest I will be extending the time for pre-orders and probably ordering extras as well. I'm so glad people are enjoying the drawings!

These are absolutely wonderful. I sincerely hope she gets a gallery exhibition for these. They'd attract a great crowd.

Also, I love how the subject of her sketch at Assembly, our system's newest station, actually highlights the station's terrible design flaw: the platforms aren't sloped to drain properly. Her sketch shows a T worker pushing water out to the track bed with a broom. I doubt this was her intention, but it's a brilliant moment of subconscious artistic genius.

I take the Orange Line but I've never actually gotten off at Assembly. It looks kind of like it's in the middle of nowhere. Does it actually let you off adjacent to the mall?

The station is a really close walk to what's already built - it just seems like it's farther because the space in between is barren parking. However, that parking, directly outside the station, will also be getting developed in the same manner as Assembly Row. It's too huge a project to do everything at once, so they did half, and are about to do the other half.

The T is already sketched out enough, isn't it?!

Not sketches, but here's someone else visiting every single T station and reviewing/photographing it: http://milesonthembta.blogspot.com/

It looks like he's doing all the bus routes, too.
