Mounties on the Common

Canadians in front of the Boston Christmas tree, a gift from Nova Scotia

A pair of Mounties bracket Halifax, NS Mayor Mike Savage, Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil and Andrea and Kyla MacEachern of Lorne, NS, who donated this year's Boston Tree as thanks for the aid Boston gave Halifax after an explosion in Halifax harbor in 1917 killed 2,000 and destroyed a large part of the city.

Now tell me do the Canadians have a lack of respect for their law enforcement officials like we do here in America? Just asking because I am curious and do not know the answer.

Like here in the United States they have respect for the 99.8% (Not footnoted) of the police, prison guards, members of the military who do their job and do it well. Canadians, like Americans, also like to point out the very, very small amount who take and use power for their own personal satisfaction of their puerile id make the rest of the good people look bad.

Canadians also like to point out moronic hosers who use the gesture of the nice people of Halifax every year donating a tree as thanks to the City of Boston for coming to their aid in a desperate time of need to make a completely non sequitur political comment.

Up yours, eh?

The Mounties wear much nicer camouflage jackets than our cops do, as you can see from the picture. Anyone can respect that.

...it blends in with the red maples in the fall.

How about Canadians aren't raised in a gun crazy culture where they're taught (encouraged!) to fear everyone that doesn't look like them and use that fear to justify the murder of innocents and children because a heavily armed trained professional with backup is "afraid".

Canadians are also raised to be more polite to guests, especially those bearing gifts to say thank you. Stay on topic dude and stop feeding the stereotype. If you wait long enough, I'm sure Trump will come back for another rally (Nazi reference intentional).

As a Canadian, whose family is from Nova Scotia, I can verify that we love our RCMP, abhor those who abuse their power, and love the tree giving tradition. Boston was really there for Halifax in their time of need. Thanks again Boston!!

I have been fortunate to have known many Canadians through work and personal life. Something about them, they are genuinely nice people. We joke that it must be something in the water up north but, at least the ones I know, they are very laid back.

Torontonians or Montrealers. They are no more nicer or polite than NYers or Bostonians.

Yes, folks from the Maritimes are good people.

As I said in another thread, I hope Nova Scotians consider their debts to Boston paid after their generosity of spirit and kind donation to Children's after the Marathon bombing. That said, I too love this tradition, and gladly accept their tree each year.

this early in the morning. Having said that, the tree is a class act, by a class city to recognize a class act by our city.

A couple of years ago I believe, AG linked to an interesting story about the blast. It was horrific. AG, if you find the time, please post that again, if you can. A good read.

There's an excellent book out called "Curse of the Narrows" by Laura M. Mac Donald that I'm currently reading. That blast was the single most powerful man-made explosion until the creation of atomic weapons. The subject is fascinating, and tragic.

I will say the mounties uniforms, which i used to poke fun at, are alot more friendly than the military looking police in the states. Some locales in the US the cops basically wear fatigues running around town.

Those are formal, ceremonial uniforms. Uniformed RCMP dress just like any other US or Canadian cop.

BTW:

Many state police formal Ceremonial uniforms are quite similar to Mountie's uniforms, except for the red tunic. In MA case, the tunic is pale blue. Rhode Island state police have almost identical uniforms as the Mounties, except for the red color.
