Return of the Brighton Tree Ninja? Tree attacked this week in Brighton Center

Tree on Peaceable Street

A correspondent forwards this photo of a newly gouged tree on Peaceable Street. He notes that whoever hacked at the tree first had to peel back the wooden boards the homeowner had placed there after a decade of attacks by a man in black who does everything he can to make trees die in the area surrounding the BPL's Brighton Center branch.

Police arrested Joseph Rizza as the tree ninja back in April; he has been in and out of custody since then as he awaits trial on charges of willful and malicious destruction of property and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Police have brought similar charges against him in the past, for his alleged proclivity for donning a black ninja outfit, then slicing up trees just enough that they will die, but that has failed to stop him, residents say.

Still, following his April arrest, the city optimistically planted new trees on Peaceable Street for the first time in several years.

Innocent, etc.

be so outraged that the trees around me were dying because they were being killed by this guy. I don't know what can be done to stop him. But can't some of these wounds be sealed over so the tree won't die? This one doesn't seem as bad as some of his past. Maybe he was interrupted. I hope they can save this tree.

I am surprised that hasn't happened yet.

He will be found dead or severely beaten, and police will be unable to find anybody who saw anything.

Give him the help he needs. If therapy and drugs won't work, there are other treatments.

Beating someone to death is obviously silly and illegal. But there are ways to deal with this guy that don't involve shrugging your shoulders. :)

I put a smiley face in my post so you wouldn't be offended.

Beating to death = silly

okay

But how do you actually suggest "removing" this guy? Armed posses?

Commitment.

Sorry, but killing trees is really not much better than killing people. I can understand the [limited] need for lumber [mostly just for toilet paper], but not destruction for the sake of it. The fact that we have trees in the city is a good thing that needs to be preserved. But we can do it in a humane manner that does not make us stoop to his level.

No doubt, this guy is a nutjob at best, or a piece of shit at worst. He needs help or monitoring or both. I like having trees, too, so I'm not suggesting we collectively shrug and ignore it. I was just reacting to the bizarro calls for beating up or killing the culprit(s), because that is seriously fucked up.

Seriously? This guy is out of his mind and you're suggesting vigilante violence.

Here is EXACTLY what I said:

Another possibility: He will be found dead or severely beaten, and police will be unable to find anybody who saw anything.

Note that I did NOT suggest or urge or support vigilante action in any way, shape, or form. I merely noted the possibility, given the level of frustration, and that it wouldn't be surprising if nobody "noticed".

Reading comprehension is not your strong suit, I take it. Particularly when you didn't react at all to comments such as these:

Perhaps some neighborhood guys will give him a beating.

The guy is a net negative. He needs to be removed.

Where is your "fauxt-rage" here?

There's an undertone to what you said. When you write things on the internet they aren't imbued with the intonation of your voice. It's sufficient to say, "I didn't mean it that way; that isn't what I meant at all." Suggesting that I'm an idiot for a rather straightforward reading of what you said is pointless. I'm happy to take you at your word that you didn't mean it that way.

Besides, on UHub, I'm in your corner about 90% of the time.

It's an anonymous account and someone else already called them out.

We don't know whether it's the same guy.

If he is still in jail when this occurred, then obviously he's not the one who did it. But if he's been a free and out on the streets for a while, then the police know who to look for.

It takes a real special kind of psychopath to do something like this.

Looks like constuction protection, 2x4 failed to protect, think your barking up the wrong tree

That made no sense at all. Care to elaborate?

They typically wrap large trees in 2x4 lumber in work zones to prevent the tree from being damaged when enviably a construction truck backs into or sideswipes it. It's possible that's what happened here and either the truck took out the 2x4 guards as well or for whatever reason they weren't placed around that section of tree. The suggestion is that the damage was accidental and not caused by the Brighton tree bandit.

I'm fucking sick of this guy! Trees give so much beauty and life to other living things. He needs to be corrrrrrected Mr. Torrence!!!
