Late-night chain pizza options could increase in Boston

Domino's, which has long dominated overnight pizza delivery in Boston could soon face new competition from Papa John's. The Boston Licensing Board tomorrow decides whether to let the Papa John's, 971 Tremont St. in Roxbury, stay open until 3 a.m.

A Papa John's manager explained the public need: Workers at nearby hotels need a place to get food when they get off work and Northeastern students need pizza late at night, especially during exams.

Nobody spoke against the proposal.

How about a late night Papa Gino's? I really enjoy true italian pizza after a night out on the town.

applying for a food serving license even have to "explain the public need?"

And if this is such a "necessary criteria" of the licensing process, then shouldn't all businesses (such as banks) also have to "explain the public need" before being granted permission to open.

"Well, um. Humans... need... food?"

But what does Papa John's say?

Papa John's Does Not Serve Food.

Neither does Dominos!

I will say, they have gotten much better in the last few years and the prices are excellent. Two large multi-topping zahs at most places in cambridge will run you damn near 40 bucks. Meanwhile, I can get three mediums from dominos for less than 20.

If Government had to explain its "public need" when creating BS departments and review boards.

Are there residences nearby? If so, I'm glad there's permitting oversight, in that case.

How dare we allow a restaurant to operate. It's not like people are able to adapt or things like that.

You live in a CITY - get used to it.

Thats More Lower Roxbury/South End

Indeed It is across the street from Slade's ( Slade's Bar & Grill
958 Tremont St, Roxbury , from their own web site ) . Nice music by the way from the site, plays automatically. But in my computer razor sharp mind, it is the South End ,, But UPS calls it UPS Drop Box
SELF-SERVE DROP BOX
1135 TREMONT ST, ROXBURY CROSSING, MA, 02120

But what would Peyton say ?

I lived off of Hammond St, which for allot of people is the South End/Lower Roxbury border. it was confusing at first, the post office called it "Roxbury Crossing," I called it the South End, parking signs called it "Lower Roxbury," there was no rhyme or reason for the madness. I called it the South End and wrote my letters that way.

How did you like living near Hammond St?

I love walking through that area: the streets of Greenwich and Warwick too. I remember digging into the history of the area as it seems like such an odd neighborhood to exist surrounded by public housing, and it turns out --- it was old-school public housing (Robert Treat Paine).

It sorta reminds me of Bay Village in that you could live decades in Boston, and not know that this tiny neighborhood existed.

I lived one street over, I loved the area, but hated my landlord, but thats another story for another day.

of Boston and Roxbury in that area was roughly Kendall St., a block east of Hammond.

I relied on the agenda, which says "Mission Hill," but after actually looking at a map, changed it to Roxbury.

They should have made them reveal the "better ingredients" as a prerequisite to getting approval.

up

I should have shown up and said that what they serve is an affront to pizza (as is Domino's) and that if they want to stay open until all hours of the night, they should have to call what they serve something else.

looked like a giant douche bag..

I'm not a fan of Dominos, but who cares if they don't sell the best pizza in the world? Are you really that sanctimonious asswipe who shits on everything they don't like?

Papa John's crappy pizza and Domino's cheese injected crust crappy pizza, I'll pass. Now, if it was Papa Gino's...

The prospect of having two crappy "pizza" places to choose from. Go to your local indi - there's no way in HELL even the worst of them can make a "pizza" as bad as domino's or papa john's.

Pretty sad that this even needs to be discussed, but encouraging that there was no opposition - maybe we are slowly inching toward being the 24/7 "world class" city that we could easily be.

Because nothing says "world class" like 24/7 shitty pizza. Excuse me if I trample you in my lemminglike eagerness to do whatever stupid counterproductive crap I'm told to do by someone who stands to line their pockets from this "world class" foolishness. I'm sure you'll see that it was all worth it.

I'm surprised no one has yet commented on "Papa" John Schnatter and his rather right-wing political views (not to mention his general disdain for his workers).

"...Northeastern students need pizza late at night..."

Never in my 4 years living at NU did I ever get pizza from there.

I'm sure there are students who do, but I don't think I ever heard anyone ever mention the idea of getting pizza from there. Just never came up.

One night, while picking up a to go order from the Regina Pizza on Thatcher Street in the North End, I watched a Domino's driver deliver a pizza to an apartment directly across the street. While I know that the Regina vs. Santarpios vs. Pepe's pizza debate is important to many, I couldn't for the life of me figure out how you pick up the phone and order Domino's with a pie like Regina right across the street.

As a convo I was having with someone and his bf at lunch....

As I say too often.. you don't go to McDonald's because you want a good cheeseburger. You go there because it's McDonald's.

Same with pizza.. sometimes you want Domino's.. sometimes you want a real pizza.

Same argument why Olive Garden has a line out the door in South Bay most saturdays... people go because it's the Olive Garden and not real italian food.

$$$

Dominos frequently offers very good promotions.

$15 for some local thing or $8 at Dominos and they throw in a side?

$15 for some local thing or $8 at Dominos and they throw in a side?

Why stop there? You can frequently get a 10-for-$10 special on Elio's frozen pizza. It's even worse and less food-like than Papa John's/Domino's, but if money matters and quality doesn't, why would you bother shelling out $8 for what is still crap?

I think that real food is always worth paying for. If you can't afford to pay for a decent pizza, ok, you can make your own, and that'll be even cheaper.
