Thieves down with expensive Canada Goose coats favored by BU elites

BU Today reports thieves are targeting the coats, which can run up to $1,300, and are finding good pickings in locker rooms at the campus fitness center - which are not equipped with surveillance cameras. Police note that, unlike iPhones, the coats have no serial numbers.

$1300 for a coat? why?

I guess that little logo screams "I have lots of money to blow."

and can afford it. that is all the reason anybody needs. when i go shopping i don't shop based on somebody elses wallet- i shop based on my own desires and income.

Obviously they can afford it and want it. One questions if they want it due to the fad or if they just find the coat comfortable and would be just as happy buying the same one without the red armband.

These are the sorts of questions which keep advertisers and product designers up at night.

I know someone with a Canada Goose coat (she got it as a gift, lest you worry that I have snooty friends), and she says it really is the warmest coat she's ever worn. Worth $700-$1300? I don't know. Quality? According to her, yes. She wanted it because she knew how useful it would be in the winter. These children may want it just as a status symbol. Who can say.

Because Canada?

That's nice. If it's consistently -10F out, which is what these coats are made for. But no, people wear them when it hits 35. Don't tell me you're THAT cold.

I love my $200 down hiking jacket, but I only wear it when it's below 20 or it's snowing, otherwise it's too damn hot. These people pay for the patch. They would not pay that much money for 'the warmest coat out there' if it didn't have that giant patch.

up
Voting closed 0

But guess what, someone else may want to wear their really warm coat when it's a little warmer out. Maybe they have thin blood. Maybe they grew up in Hawaii. Maybe they just like to be warm. Regardless, some people like nice coats, other like nice cars, others like nice food. Stop bitching about what people decide to spend their money on.

People buy things to show off all the time.

up
Voting closed 0

They are of a high socioeconomic background (what many would describe as 'rich'), and have no problem blowing $800-1200. on a coat marketed towards those attracted to a pretentious fad. In plain English, they're 'rich brats'. Not that there's anything wrong with being a spoiled, rich brat. Boston is full of them.

up
Voting closed 0

How do you know they're "brats"?

up
Voting closed 0

they have money and spend it on themselves. that is pretty much the only criteria the sad, jealous, angry people here need.

even comfortable middle class people/families are shown tremendous vitriol here for any display of wealth- or, which is worse- a display of not being dirt poor.

up
Voting closed 0

Most likely their parents, freaked out about sending their kid to the frozen tundra of Boston, made sure they had a really warm coat.

That and a t-pass are way cheaper than a car.

up
Voting closed 0

People that are so concerned about what other people spend on clothing, cars, etc... baffle me. If you have the means to buy it and it has personal value then I don’t see the problem. But hey, everyone should live like a pauper because you can have a coat just as warm for only $200.

up
Voting closed 0

It's just envy. Inwardly people are saying "I wish I could have that," or "If I had that much money, I'd spend it better," but it comes out like this so it sounds less self-serving and childish.

Canada Goose jackets: it's a hipster thing... trendy logo and coyote fur trimmed hood. I guess if students are already going to be 6 figures in debt, they may as well tack on another thousand dollars for a jacket? Kids also get their expensive sneakers stolen, so this is no different.

up
Voting closed 0

Yeah, I don't think it's a "hipster" thing.

up

It's pretty clear that anon has no idea what a "hipster" is and is simply applying it as a convenient label on anyone under the age of 50 that he/she wants to sneer at. So, please be kind to those with impaired vocabularies.

"I'm from California and I didn't even know there's a temperature below 55!"

When I was an undergrad we used to play "Spot the Californian" on the street on the first cold day of fall. They'd be in ski boots, down jackets, hats, scarves, and gloves when everyone else was in maybe a fleece jacket at the most.

When thieves were straight mugging people for their Triple Goose Down jackets. Compared to being shot over a coat, the BU kids are getting off easy.

EDIT- I just remembered that they were Triple Fat Goose coats. Guess what I didn't wear.

Can someone please make thousands more of these coats and reduce the population of stupid Canada Geese? Flood the market, drive down the price and use up all the surplus geese. It's a win for everyone (oh, except the geese.)

The fur on the hoods of these jackets is from coyotes caught in Canada using foot traps. When I see someone wearing one all I see is dead dog around their neck. Sexy.

Mommy and daddy will just buy them another one... Seems like a win-win to me.

up

Maybe the students could simply rip the patch off...problem solved!

I'm at FitRec daily and see quite a few of these coats on hangers in high-traffic areas; I was thinking just last week that they were ripe for lifting. Students can get a free lock for a day locker at the gym if they don't have a permanent locker, it takes just a few minutes to pick one up.

Te story reminded me of the young entrepreneur who a year or so ago was selling 'American Duck' patches for $5 that looked nearly identical to the Canada Goose patch. As I recall there was a Cease and Desist order served...

The hating on "those that have more than me" attitude is on this site is constant, and pathetic.

Should not matter how much the coat cost, or how much money you do/do not have, it still does not give somebody else the right to steal your stuff.

If you insist on complaining about something, which seems to be a perquisite for participation on this forum, perhaps you could complain about the lack of security at BU, or the inconsiderate attitude of others to take what is not theirs?

up
Voting closed 0

I have seen enough posts regarding that statement on this site. I would say that is even more pathetic.

up
Voting closed 0

two wrongs do not make a right. you are correct in that thats a shitty attitude as well but in no way, shape, or form should it be brought up to mitigate how pathetic the other is.

Let me complain about the phrase "hating ON".

Time to let that ON float away like a rogue goose down feather.

Let's see, rich students wearing $800 coats and leaving them unlocked in a public space... I think most of us making fun of the stupidity that's in abundance.

Do the people who are criticizing the victims of this crimes also criticize drivers whose cars are stolen of anything but a barebones car, 12,000 car? Do you criticize people who drive SUVs, lux trucks (4 door leisure style pickups), Harley Davidsons (what austentatiousnous, a motorcycle without the fancy brand can be had for much less than the 20-30k lux motorcycles like Harelys cost? How about people who own anything but small apts or 2 bedroom, 1 bath simple homes, are they to be mocked for their lavishness?

up
Voting closed 0

If you drive a luxury car (expensive coat) into an untrustworthy neighborhood (public coat rack in a gym!) and leave the keys in it (don't lock it), yep, you deserve the criticism.

Some people have valuable belongings stolen from them and U Hub commentors jeer them ? How do any of you casually tossing out pejoratives know that the victims of these crimes didn't work to earn what they have, material or otherwise ? I can think of quite a number of possible expenditures that might make me question a person's judgement or taste. A nice warm winter coat in Massachusetts in February is not one of them. This blog comment space is becoming a cesspool of negativity.

You must not be familiar with BU students. I worked for BU for about 4 years, way back in the 1980s. Even then it was known, in general, as a school for very wealthy kids who did not have the grades to get into what was considered a better school. I don't think that aspect of the BU student population has changed very much. Aside from that, do you really think a college kid at BU is going to be working at a job to make enough dough to afford a $1,300 coat? Perhaps but I think the financing is coming from the Bank of Mom and/or Dad.

I'm sure your experience from 30 years ago still holds true to this day.

As concerns the socioeconomic bracket of those attending BU, in fact, it's more likely to be true than ever. Just look at the tuition.

up
Voting closed 0

while you're there, why don't you also look at the stats of the incoming freshman as another user has posted already, amount of need-based scholarships awarded in the past academic years, diversity of the student body, etc.

Looking at the tuition alone is simply a shallow observation, it tells us nothing considering tuition has been on a steady rise in pretty much most 4 year private universities around the country. Considering that Harvard and MIT's tuition for 2015-2016 is not that different, I guess they too are full of rich spoiled kids by your standards.

This was no winter coat. This was a $1,300 winter coat. That means this person probably isn't on the streets freezing because he or she doesn't have his coat anymore. I'm not going to say I'm happy that some thief or their family who actually needs a warm coat now has one, but I think it is natural for people to feel less sorry for those who have luxury items taken from then than from those who have necessities taken from them.

up
Voting closed 0

doesn't make it right. How does anyone know how anyone came about a jacket? Maybe it was a very much appreciated gift from someone special.

Do we criticize the kids that spend $300 on sneakers? I've read right here on UHub people justifying that. I guess the same can't be said for BU kids.

Really, this envy of those that have more is getting more and more apparent.

I know kids who went to BU. These kids did not come from rich families, they worked through school, have debt and were grateful for the education.

Here I thought it wasn't good form to paint everyone with such broad brushes.

up
Voting closed 0

If if the person who took that coat sold it and bought 4 winter coats for family members that were going cold this winter I wouldn't feel as bad that's all.

And yea, I'll blame the victim here. If you have a $1,200 coat, LOCK YOUR DAMN LOCKER.

up

This is what some people don't seem to get... blah blah, a precious gift, blah blah, worked hard to buy it.... THEN YOU WOULDN'T BE LEAVING IT UNLOCKED IN A GYM WHERE IT WOULD GET STOLEN!
It sucks... but be smarter next time. I worry about my cheap bike seat whenever I leave it in a public spot... a $800+ coat unlocked?

Leaving your $1,000 jacket unattended at a campus fitness center is akin to not locking up your $1,000 bike when you run into Dunkies for a coffee. Of course no one deserves to have their belongings stolen, but why would you make it so easy for thieves? Do you lock the door to your apartment? It's not rocket science.

The brand is well loved by people who spend a lot of time outdoors in arctic conditions, and with good reason: excellent construction, great technical performance, and lots of nice features. They are pricey because they are trendy, but also because they are actually made in Canada by workers with good wages and benefits and because they are top of the line in terms of performance.

I know someone who has a jacket that is over 25 years old, survives regular trips through the laundry, and is still warm and very functional (despite the lack of convenient pockets for things like cel phones). However, she lives in Northern Manitoba, where it matters. She bought it after getting stuck in a ditch in her car in a storm for more than a day and hasn't regretted it.

That said, very little of living in Boston, even the past two winters, justifies having one for its technical merit. If you work through the winter on top of Mt. Washington, you are going to want one. If you work outdoors all winter at a ski area north of the 45th Parallel, you might want one. If you are planning an arctic or sub-arctic expedition, they are great for that. Multi-day snowshoeing trek in the White Mountains or the Rockies - sure. Moving to Winnipeg? Might be nice.

I had my Members Only jacket stolen from my locker.

Yes, it seemed important at the time.

I think I'll buy a Canada Goose patch and stitch it onto my B.U.M. Equipment sweatshirt.

Think I could get extra money for that at a yard sale?

oh well. i guess having money is ok only if you prostrate yourself before the masses and spend it on civic improvements and charity, not things you can wear, drive, or use.

despite the fact that many wealthy families are plenty charitable.
