"Democrat" mentioned in the sixth (out of eight) paragraph. I guess sneaking it into the end of the story is better than nothing. Priceless.

After all these years, a state senator in eastern Massachusetts is revealed to be a Demmie! Those bastards!

Seriously, the default around here is D. Might as well has said "Joyce, who continues to breath ..."

With Joyce's departure, there will be three vacant seats in the Senate and five Republicans. I guess they could have said "(D-Milton)" right off the bat, but I generally assume that state legislators are Democrats, because that's a pretty safe bet.

I'm sure he knows exactly what the Feds have on him and it's probably career ending.
Buh Bye Senator

but we'll have to soldier on. Life stops for no one. There are shirts to be picked up at the cleaners, new sunglasses needed for the early Spring afternoon Sun, too many graduation parties to attend and the monotiny of real estate closings to wrap up...

...for his son's HS graduation party? Really? I'd be embarrassed if my dad did that. Did he get junior a cushy job, too?

of that campaign fund once he leaves office? Some charity will get a big windfall. How about this instead - refund the remaining money to the original donors.

He'll donate it to another Dem running for office, the national committee, or to "wind down" his campaign office.

anon's point still stands - the surplus funds should be RETURNED to the people who donated them in the first place.

But that will never happen. My point was that the odds of Joyce doing anything productive with his excess of funds is slim. I mean, the guy is charging his campaign $700/month for a leased vehicle!

of campaign finance reform from donations to expenditures. After all, 30+ years of increasingly restrictive laws concerning donations have not done a thing to reduce expenditures, have they?

There's zero reason why politicians need to live the high life (how many $500 steak dinners at Ruths Chris are paid for by campaign donations) on their donors dime. I'd be very few people think the money they're giving goes to these types of expenditures...leased luxury cars, fancy dinners, "fact-finding" trips to the Azores (Joyce went in '13). It's basically a slush fund for them to live a fancy lifestyle while crying poor. Like Tito Jackson charging his campaign fund for $200 in chinese food from a BROOKLINE restaurant once or twice a month. http://www.ocpf.us/Reports/DisplayReport?menuHidden=true&id=562965#sched...

Not primarily because someone succumbed to human greed, but because our joke ethics rules (and norms). allow it.

As I'm sure Mayor (and former Union Boss, and Rep from the neighboring district) Walsh would say "it's just how things are done".

Sunglass bribes. Private clients with business in front of the legislature. Laundry. Campaign funds violations. Good riddance, and can't wait to hear what the feds have.

The Legislature should be embarrassed? You're not from around here, are you? The people who run for state office here have no shame, so they can't be shamed. In fact, the whole point of getting into office is to do the very things you're complaining about.
