Women resume 20-year-old grudge match, this time on roller skates at a birthday party in Mattapan

When two women who'd gotten into a physical fight 20 years ago in Framingham spotted each other across the Chez Vous skating rink in Mattapan one night in January, they took up where they'd left off - and never mind both were guests at a birthday party or that they were now in their 40s.

At a hearing before the Boston Licensing Board this morning, police and rink officials said the women quickly escalated from mere accusative looks and snarls to a clinch on the evening of Jan. 31.

By the time it was over, both were at local police stations - one at B-3 right behind the rink, the other at B-2 in Roxbury - filing A&B complaints against each other. One of the women claimed she was sucker punched in the head and then, when she was down on the ground, kicked repeatedly. Her sister, who rushed over to her side, claimed their opponent bit her ring finger. An officer at B-3 advised her to get a tetanus shot.

"Two young ladies were yelling at each other at a very high tone, and proceded to what I would call tussle," a rink manager told the board.

A B-3 detective said the women were 40, 44 and 48. "Time for them to grow up, huh?" board Chairwoman Christine Pulgini mused.

The rink manager said the person who'd organized the birthday party invited the two main battlers, unaware that they'd been quietly seething about the other for two decades.

The detective said the whole matter spilled into Dorchester Municipal Court, where a clerk magistrate found probable cause for a charge against the alleged sucker-punching finger biter. But then, he said, the two main antagonists reached an agreement to just let the thing go already.

The board votes Thursday whether it thinks the rink could have prevented the fight on wheels.

Why on earth is this in front of the licensing board?

I get it. A fight broke out in a licensed establishment in the city. But really? We can't just let the police deal with these two pieces of trash? How is a licensed establishment supposed to stop two people with a 20 year feud from brawling? If it happened outside the establishment and neither was a patron, the police would have dealt with it. Why are we punishing business with expensive lawyer fees for this type of crap?

Its not fair that a business has to fork out $500 an hour for representation in front of this Kangaroo court.

They represented themselves.

This system is set up for lawyers by lawyers.

The ones that don't play the game get punished.

or did they have a one-day alcohol license for this event? If neither, then I don't see why the Licensing Board even has jurisdiction.

The board doesn't only regulate alcohol licenses:

One was before the Boston Licensing Board, chaired by Christine Pulgini, which I attended. The other, on the same incident, was before the Mayor's Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing, chaired by Christine Pulgini, which I didn't bother sticking around for because once was quite enough.

Ain't City Hall bureaucracy grand?

My aunt moved to Galway in 1974. Only came back for my wedding in 2006. Every time I visited her she would go on about how much she loved skating there.

But yeah, they are probably just Irish in spirit.

Does anyone say that about men who get into a fistfight (or worse) because they have a longstanding problem with someone?

Not defending violence and grudges, but I don't recall hearing this said about men.

How often do you hear about people resuming 20-year-old feuds in roller rinks, period?

I had the same thought - men never seem to be told to "grow up" after acting like barbaric fools

Then you live in bizarro world. Men are ALWAYS told to grow up, even if they say something stupid, e.g. "that's what she said".

I agree that they are told to grow up for acting immature, but behaving violently seems to be in a different category when it comes to men and boys.

nothing like mom and aunt Shirley beating the shit out of someone at a birthday party. A great way to teach the kids how to behave as responsible adults.

In the late 70's , whenever the Toronto Maple Leafs would visit the old Garden, they'd send out their thug Dave "Tiger" Williams when Terry O'Reilly would step on the ice for his first shift... O'Reilly and Williams would simply look at each other, just a glance, and they'd both immediately drop the gloves and start pounding each other.
God I miss the "old days"....I'll have to stop by Chez Vous next time I'm in the lovely neighborhood...(y'know, like when I'm in the mood to go out for a cold beer and a stabbing... )
