Cheapskate suburban slobs dumping their trash in Hyde Park, officials say

The Bulletin reports on efforts by Hyde Park officials to clean up the neighborhood. At a meeting earlier this week, officials said that no matter what they do, the neighborhood is at a disadvantage because it's surrounded by suburbanites who use the city as their dumping ground - including a Milton pre-school that was dumping all its trash in the neighborhood.

This is not a new complaint.

As a long time resident of HP I highly doubt it is the lazy suburbanites dumping trash. If you are going to dump trash in the city why would you dump it in the least accessible neighborhood?

No, it has something to do with the population base that makes up HP.

You can go from Hyde Park to Dedham or Milton without even knowing it.

If you really knew Hyde Park, you'd know that.

And if you spent anytime in the bordering neighborhoods you would note they are much cleaner than the more urban parts of HP. And yes HP is the least accessible part of Boston, convenient from nowhere.

And again, going between the two communities is very, very easy. And I cannot say that there is a difference in neatness between the Hyde Park and Dedham sections of River Street, or the area between Cleary Square and Dedham Center in general. The only way I notice the change in locality is that the concrete sidewalk becomes asphalt.

Hyde Park might be the least accessible part of Boston, but it is very, very easy to get to Dedham or Milton from Hyde Park. That you claim to be a lifelong resident of the neighborhood and do not know that says a lot.

Do you note a lot of trash in the Fairmount neighborhood? No? Interesting. When is the last time you visited Cleary square? Litter everywhere.

When I am on the Milton side of my run, I tend to stay on Truman Parkway.

Cleary Square? I'm crossing River Street on Hyde Park Ave by foot 2 to 3 times a week. No messier than Roslindale Square or the area by that strip mall where High Street and Milton Street cross in Dedham. Honestly, though I don't walk down Centre Street in West Roxbury that much, I would say that it compares will Cleary Square.

Look, I could make assumptions about you based on your first comment, but you have stuck it out in Hyde Park while some of your compatriots decamped to Walpole or wherever, so I won't. Could Hyde Park be cleaner? Probably, but how many places in Boston wouldn't say that.

This is 100% a result of the pay as you throw policy in Milton. They dump in Dorchester too. We also share a border with Milton. They are too cheap to pay for their services so they steal from the City of Boston.
Also, if Cleary Square is so dirty, have you created a 311 case or called City Hall about it? Or do you just complain in the UHub comments and hope they'll magically clean it up? The City will actually do something about it if you tell them.

adjacent milton neighbors who must pay a per bag fee for trash, do it all the time. This was even the subject of a radio talk show a while back because the dumpee consistently found the same milton guy's trash in his dumpster and asked the dumper not to do it and when it continued he outed him on the radio. it happens all the time.

Is it the Fairmount Hill or the Readville neighborhoods having trouble with trash? If it were Milton/Dedham folk those would be the neighborhoods effected.

Or maybe you're just trying to say you did it.

Yeah, why would you illegally dump something in a comparatively low-density neighborhood without a lot of passersby or police patrols? Clearly illegal dumpers would prefer something easily accessible, like Downtown Crossing! I mean, heck, you can just take the subway there!

And if you have a motor vehicle, it's just so hard to get to Hyde Park, what with all the unpaved roads, horse-drawn carriages, frequent flooding, and so on.

Because HP is the most easily accessible to those bordering towns, Like Milton and Dedham for instance... those towns apparently have more restrictive curbside pickup so people from that town will attempt to dispose of their garbage in HP, which has less restrictive rules.

Not to say that residents of HP don't litter (they definitely do) and clearly / logan needs a lot of work. The bordering towns dumping is a legitimate issue.

I remember fondly Boston basically picking up ANYTHING we put out. Didn't fit in a barrel, no problem. Hot water heater? If the scrap guy didn't get it, the trash guy would. TV's, AC's, required a call to DPW to arrange a pickup, but it only took a few minutes to arrange.

Dedham isn't that bad about pickup, anything that fits in a barrel is ok. One big item a week allowed, you have to call the week before and they only pickup on Mondays, or you can haul it over to the transfer station yourself. But knowing Boston's policy, I've thought about just driving whatever didn't fit back to our old apartment to be done with it.

We need a wall to keep those no good suburbanites out and Marty is going to make Brookline, Dedham, Quincy, Newton, Cambridge. Somerville, and Milton pay for it!

Anyone know the history of that tiny strip of land along Alford Street that belongs to Boston (according to Google Maps)?

Does Quincy share a land border with Boston?

They'll have to tear down the bridge too!

This is like a direct opposite of the Milton argument against the foot bridge over the Neponset River.

Hah.
And yes, people do illegally dump in Boston from the surrounding suburbs:

I live on Fairmount, and Milton is at the end of our street. They do often put their large items on our curbs for trash days that they would have to pay to have moved (TVs, appliances, couches, etc.) that Boston takes for free. That is not my issue though. What I think is disgusting is how dirty and gross Cleary Square and Logan Square are. It is hard to attact good businesses when you have cigarette butts, gum, piles of spit, condoms, trash, even dirty diapers on the sidewalks. Only a few of the storefronts seem to care. The Family Dollar Store is disgusting, and has a loudspeaker warning people walking by that they are on surveillance. As long as stuff like this goes on and nobody picks up after themselves, Hyde Park is never going to get nice.

Although I used to frequent Hyde Park years ago, I rarely get there now and won't argue your assertions.

However, I am curious about one thing. How does one pile spit?

I pay taxes in the city which, in part, provide the equipment and personnel for curbside pickup of my trash at no additional fee as well as bulk items, recycling, yard waste, etc. Since those neighboring towns have their own trash policies and funding the residents are stealing from the city of Boston (and me as a taxpayer) by dropping their large items over the line like that.

That Bulletin article is all over the place. It's basically a bunch of quotes with no structure.

And it doesn't explicitly explain one of the issues -- that surrounding towns charge per bag for residential trash pickup, which some people claim encourages them to dump it in Boston for free.

..was about 12 years ago when someone drove up in a car, opened the door and put an old dilapidated suitcase next to a neighbor's garbage barrel which was put on the curb for collection. Neighbor came out complaining about suburbanites who dumped their trash here (West Roxbury) to avoid paying for removal in their towns. She then moved the suitcase next to her neighbor's barrels!

I asked her (a good church-goer) why she would do that to someone else when she didn't like that being done to her. She looked surprised and then said she didn't like strange people putting their garbage in front of her house.

Up side - she stopped asking me to go to church with her.

Cities and towns creating new taxes on their citizens. Things your town used to do out if the budget like trash pickup is now a separate tax. This allows them to play games with the tax money that used to pay for it. Yes, the dumpers are scumbags but when you create this system of the commons this is what happens. The world is an imperfect place full of imperfect people.

Bizarre that people here are leaving comments denying that illegal dumping is happening in the city. Wake up to yourselves, suburbanites!
