Taking one last bite at Anthony's Pier 4

Anthony's Pier 4 demolition nearly done

John Gage watched the last bits of Anthony's Pier 4 being torn down today. It's making way for a park to go with a luxury residential tower, of course.

Years ago that was a top restaurant. I was fortunate enough to enjoy it many times. I loved looking at the pictures of all the "famous" customers.

It was a weird area, kind of desolate at night. I remember a Christmas Eve many years ago; my cousins and I were hanging down that area killing time as we were supposed to be at Christmas Eve Mass and it was kind of creepy. I think it was only Anthony's and Jimbos down there then for such a prime piece of real estate.

The area was awesome, in a desolate kind of way.
My memory is Jerry Beck organizing an art installation in an adjoining lot filled with dead MBTA trains, a pop-up installation where you walked with candles through the cars that had been painted with graffiti and fitted with little altar-ish displays.
We probably hit the Sands or the Channel after.
I so miss the 80s.

the "seaport" was a pretty desolate spot 20 years ago just anthony's and my grandfather's favorite, jimmys harborside. whitey bulger used to conduct business in some of the surrounding parking lots.

they should have let the red sox build a new park next to the water (retractable roof).

Yes, Jimmy's Harborside - not Jimbos.

thanks. I knew it was someone named Jim.

it was across the street. alot of the shipbuilders and Navy personnel would eat there. good food at a better price than in the restaurant.

Jimbo's (was that the name?) was owned by a relative of Jimmy's. They used the old Jimmy's Harborside plates where the restaurant logo was faded. Great food in a basic atmosphere place. My father took me there a few times because he sometimes had to go to the Army base there.

I also loved Jimmy's Harborside. One of the only places that served finnan haddie. And I think they gave a scallop small plate to the table when you were seated.

Anyone got any clam chowder recs that can compete with Anthony's?
