Just spent $650,000 on your brand new South End condo? Don't worry, the gang violence comes free with the neighborhood.

Thanks, Villa.

Nice post. Walsh should use it as a Boston tourism ad, or the BRA should use it in one of their development proposals. Says a lot.

It's an idiotic way of saying streets.

Streets, I'm guessing.

I've lived in west newton street for almost two decades. I've grown up here, so I can tell you that the violence has declined rapidly. There was a time that you couldn't go a week seein kids from villa getting stomped out by cathedral kids, cathedral kids getting stomped out by villa kids, cathedral shooting at villa, and villa shooting back. This is the first shooting on this side of mass ave in almost a year. I was out there last night on my steps when I saw the dudes come down the street and look at me and my cousins, then turn back around real suspicious and come back up the street. We hopped in a car and circled the block and went back on my steps. Then the shooting started. We've improved as a neighborhood when it comes to violence, but we're not perfect. What neighborhood is?

Sorry, just stating the facts here....there was a man shot and killed at Tremont and Rutland in December. Definitely been shootings on this side of mass ave in less than six months.

I always wondered if we'd ever contact alien life. Apparently we have, they just live in VV and Cathedral. There seem to be two warring tribes of creatures that fight over something, perhaps it is about their standing in the place where they live and who is better. Who knows?

Just remember as you pay $2,500 a month for your one bedroom on Montgomery Street that your taxes are helping support this lifestyle. Knock one back at Stephi's sometime and contemplate the nobility of public housing.

I was paying $2,500 to live on Montgomery in 2005. Try $3,500-$4,000.

I lived on Warren Ave.. the "good side" of the SoEnd.. and I paid 1200/mo for a 1 bedroom with all utilities included in 2006. Of course that same apartment is now being rented for 2200/mo.....

Crime has dropped across all of Boston over the past two decades. Yet the most violent and criminally active region of Boston Proper remains in and around The Villa. So, what's your point again?

For me, reading your ignorance in a comment insults me. I've lived in the Villa Victoria my whole life. And yes there have been violence for decades around the whole south end area. And yes there are some people who have not grown up and think that the street life is the way to live, which is sad. But i take it personal, as a person who grew up and currently resides in the Villa Victoria has nothing to do with the violence. Btw i happen to be a coach in the very little league that it is in the south end. Not all people are the same, even if we are from the same neighborhood.

I don't mean to disparage any person or creed, but the vast majority of crime in the South End tends to occur in and arround the Villa, and sadly, facts are stubborn things.

I love Boston more than most things in life, and I want to see it – along with all of the people who call it home – succeed and move forward as a pleasant and civil society.

I'm sure 98% of the Villa's residents are peaceful, law abiding citizens, but that unfortunately doesn't change the face that it remains one of Boston Proper's most criminally active neighborhoods.

Ignorant people should move back to their small towns. These people who comment online yet have no social skills in public. I pay more for rent then some of you ignorant people who are clearly from the new group of south endians. Go back to Tewksbury

I suggest you move out of the city!! Move somewhere you can get your trail mix and make comments after a person was shot. "New south end condo". Your right. "New south end". I know for a fact the suburbs surrounding are opiate and heroin riddled. They rob, stab and shoot. Oh yeah!! They are victims

....soon they'll be men on their South End stoops in nothing but their shirt sleeves.

For the obscure reference. Was it Fitzgerald or Amory who wrote that?

I know it comes from John Philip Marquand's "The Late George Apley", but I don't know if that fictional quote was referencing something real. If you go here and search for "shirt" you can find the quote.

Great book, btw. Lots of Boston history from the turn of last century, and a gentle satire of the upper class. And it won a Pulitzer!
