The Boston Fire Department reports "careless disposal of smoking material" sparked a fire around 11:45 a.m. on the roof of 57 W. 7 St. that jumped to the siding at 55 and 59 W. 7 St. - "specifically using a rooftop planter as an ashtray."

The department reports no injures; six residents of 57 W. 7, however, were displaced.

I'm glad no one was hurt. That's always the most important thing - but obviously, it's incredibly hard to be homeless all of a sudden, and to have lost whatever possessions/sentimental souvenirs you once had. A few years ago, the house I was living in caught on fire, and spread to the house next door. It's really, really terrifying how fast it happens, and how devastating.

I've mentioned fires jumping from building to building during conversations in the "real world". Often times my words are met with, "Yeah right!"...

Needs to visit the kiddos at BC and remind them of the dangers of smoking and grilling onto of decks.

Boston Fire Dept. (@BostonFire) tweeted that the cause of the fire was due to the use of a rooftop planter as an ashtray for disposal of smoking material.

Example #79535578 of why smokers are idiots.

to include the fact that in addition to a vendetta against cars, you also cant stand smokers

I know of exactly one smoker who disposes of his butts responsibly. He puts them out, then places them in a metal box that he takes with him (this is anytime he's somewhere that doesn't have something specifically for disposal of cigarette butts). Every other smoker I know or have seen takes the approach of "toss it, extinguishing first optional". Is your experience really that different?

(these aren't horrible people, btw - but there is this bizarre sense of entitlement now in our society with regard to disposal this particular type of nasty and dangerous trash)

Yes, I'm not fan of people who kill pedestrians and burn peoples homes down. I'm more than OK with being associated with that statement.

Not all smokers are idiots but many forget they are playing with fire.

They also seem to forget about the whole cancer thing, heart disease, littering, etc.
