For second time this month, a basic waterfront eatery shuts down

Sleeper Street Cafe closed forever

Dan Feidt is none too happy to see this sign in the window of Sleeper Street Cafe, which will close Friday, less than a month after the nearby Yada Yada closed to make way for a craft-beer place:

I just want a basic sandwich not microwaved blah.

Only chains will be allowed in the corporate welfare district known as the Seaport. Southie runs on microwaved blah and Legal McCrapfest.

The area does need more lower priced lunch places - can't eat at gourmet restaurants every meal! This place, however, had fairly pedestrian sandwiches at not that cheap prices - cheaper than Flour (who isn't) but not really worth the walk there.

Far enough away from the most of the occupied buildings, meaning you had to go there on purpose, without much to draw you there. They didn't do themselves any favors either - web site presents itself as a place to get lunch for large groups only - prices presented as per person based on minimum of 5 people. Had to actually walk in and ask to find out I could buy just one sandwich and as I said, it was ok.

Yelp reviews kinda say the same - out of the way, ok food, etc. Some also talk about minimal heating of paninis (pressing for 10 seconds at most, not closing lid, etc.), resulting in lukewarm hot sandwiches. I never noticed (went there twice) any evidence of not being clean but others have noted.

They could have created a niche for themselves for people who didn't want to spend $$$ at Flour, Bees Knees, Pastoral, etc. but didn't - Metro has more stuff and closer to the action. This location will be centrally located once the current construction is complete - will be prime for whoever takes over lease.

Too easy to blame big brother on this one.

And have eaten there just a few times because I found this place to be mediocre at best.

The best place for a quality inexpensive weekday lunch around this area is the Moakley Courthouse cafeteria. Seriously!

They also make basic (but better) sandwiches, and have a better (and way less expensive) salad bar than Metro. They also have hot food, pizza, and pretty good desserts.

Just leave your cell phone and belt at the office.

Along with good financial times, come increasing rents. The city needs to be able to support stores selling $5000 watches and places selling $5 sandwiches.
